I can see another recent thread but thats about controling the camera.. i ahve seasrched but

complete know nothing on the subject.. no idea what software or equipment i would need.. how do i shoot tethered to a dell laptop using my mkIV

You should be able to use the Canon EOS Utility, select remote shooting (having set up the preferences - folder to save to etc) then fire away as per normal. It'll bring up the remote control panel but you can still change settings via the camera!

eos utility and a wft or usb cable

you then set up the folder and have LR watch the folder, I did a tutorial on it a while back :D

EOS Utility comes with your camera! Check the CDs in the box ;) The one you received with your MKIV should work with all cameras.. so you'd only need to install that for it to work with your MKIII.

It's my fault for not being as generous with my info as I could have been... bitten me in the behind now :D

oops cheers phil.. found it all nice and sealed.. instaled it.. then realised i dont need it on PC but on laptop so currently installing on there.. got a loverly long usb lead

so who else actualy does tethered pitchside and do you find usb or wft betetr?

did i miss somehting?

Beats me too, 1st thing I did was have a look in tutorials as I thought I'd missed one but nowt there

Don't use it pitch side but I do use the mark III & IV for taking shots for product catalogues, I just set up the camera on a tripod and connect to the laptop with a usb cable and use EOS Utility. This means I can just sit at the laptop and get one of the other guys to move the furniture in and out of shot and I just click away on the laptop and get a full screen preview after every shot to make sure it's OK. Will be the same if you are shooting from the touch lines except you will end up with interesting pics and I just have photos of chairs and desks:bang:

I think the limit for usb cables is 5 metres so if you need to be further away than that the Canon wireless unit would be needed however the price of those will make you wince:'(

Cheers
Ian

You can daisy chain usb cables using active repeater usb extension cables, I believe you can then have a max. length of 25m.

No you'll need a usb cable.. if you want wireless then you'll need an Eye Fi card

Sorry to jump in here Kipax and hijack the thread, but I think the answer to this may help you too. I am curious about the Eye Fi card. Is anyone actually using one and do they work?
The concept seems quite good for studio work or pitchside work so would be interested to find out how it all fits together with wireless tethered shooting.

i have just setup eos utilities and usb cable.. so easy and works fantastic.. this will save me loads of time pitchside.. ok not loads of time but it will seem like loads of time... easy to just glance at laptop and tag a file..

cuts out swapping mem cards in camera and computer then downloading and taking at same time

i am using my same workflow as registered my faststone image viewer to view files as they download..

its gomnna be great pitchside

what would be really good and is probably avalable? is the ability when reviewing in camera to hit a button on the camera and it only downlaods that pic on view ?

no prop paulmack.. i am loving this thread.. but still a bit puzzled with tdodd?

wft? do i need something else for that or just a matter of setting up software.. or extra somehting else needed? its installed with canon utils

Looks like you are sorted, but here's some info from me as I shoot tethered regularly.

Start up EOS utilities first before plugging the camera in to avoid glitches. If you are using Photomechanic or Lightroom as the ingestor, ensure you have the "linked program" (or "linked application") unticked and blank in EOS utilities otherwise it doesn't work properly.

You might need to ensure that your "watched folder" if using Lightroom is empty before you try and point EOS utilities at it.

Careful with your filenames - I have EOS utilities set up to not change the filename, but just drop each file into the watched folder to be picked up & renamed by Lightroom.

Watch your buffer - you wont be able to shoot as many shots in sequence when tethered compared to running off the card - reason is that tethered is slower than writing to the card so the buffer fills up stopping your sequence. I've had it stop at 7 or 8 frames so take care!

Ensure you set EOS utilities up to leave the images on the card as well just in case.

Have another card reader set up & plugged in just in case, and also to handle download from your second camera assuming you are using one.

There's no ability to download selective pics as far as I know.

EDIT - sorry just noticed you are using Faststone to view your pics not PM or LR.

I have to add that these have the ability to connect to the internet and upload pics to anyone you wish or to a ftp a server. They have usb and ethernet ports and can write directly to a portable hard drive or connect to a gps device with usb support.

You can trigger up to 10 slave cameras from the master camera.

They will take a usb pen drive and write to that if desired and if used on a 1D4 they will take a bluetooth USB dongle.

They are available 2nd hand.

admirable.. yep looked into them.. but still a bit much.,. maybe if i outgrow the usb method as is possible :)

OK Was thinking once its started couple of minuted before match then i am set to go.. battery has 6 hr life so can setup pre match and leave on.. one thin i found is to stop the laptop going to sleep ...

i dont use either of the above and have my own image viewer that i registered in eos utils.. there is no tick boxes?

Careful with your filenames

seemed a time saver.. is it dodgy or slows it down or?

Watch your buffer -

haa right.. i dont usualy go more then 2/3 shots but a good celebration can go more... if i have save to card ticked with it still fill the camera buffer or everyhting stop?

Ensure you set EOS utilities up to leave the images on the card as well just in case.

yep did that :)

yup i have the cf express card adapter built into laptop so i can never forget :)

thats a shame.. chimping then maybe pressing function to save a file of choice would be a brilliant addition..

cheers tobers.. easy to setup and really looking forward to giving it a try.. need to try it on a practice match before actual needed of course.. but having it save to card as well is a good fail safe :)

excellent info in here! thanks

did anyone find a link to the Lightroom "watched folder" tutorial? I failed with the search function :(

This exact setup was great for cricket last year...lots of guys take along 20m power extensions, so I took a 4-way power lead, plugged the laptop in (so it's on ALL day) and the camera either on AC dummy battery or battery only if it had enough.

Tethered shooting all day with the cricket...it's on a tripod so you can just sit back and enjoy the ambiance.

Roll on Summer eh :)

I shot tethered today.. PNE v Cardiff... wow .. loved it :) sucks the laptop battery having full screen pics on all the time but its a very strong battery and lasted the match... made life a lot easier.. that coupled with my first use of photomechanic and most importantly the player codes... well a lot easier and will get easier as i get used to the new software..

thanks for the help on setting up tethered everyone.. so simple as well :)

I think he wrote a similar answer to purpleclouds but was beaten to it, hence the edit on the post he made.

Wouldn't the usb cable get in the way when you are shooting?

did he? well he edited it too quick to read.. shame... wasnt intentional.. no real need to t ke the hump :( best PM him :)
nice long usb lead with laptop setup at my side.. worked perfect..

I think he was kidding, everyone on here is to keen to help its a challenge to answer the op's question first :D

Glad it worked well, do many pro's do this?

I ahve sent him a PM to make sure :)

I have not seen any use tethered TBH ...although some do.

It's lovely that people are so concerned about why I got the hump. I had written a reply that gave a bit more detail than the one by Purple Clouds, and then edited it to add a whole lot more information, covering USB connections, the Eye-Fi card and Canon's WFT transmitter. With my edits done and dusted I then saw new replies covering the same ground or asking questions I had already covered. The timing of the replies made it hard to believe that my revised text had not already been seen, so I wondered why on earth people were just repeating the advice that had already been given. What would be wrong with saying "Tim's covered it."? It was like I had written in invisible ink. Needless to say it meant that my post was worthless, since everone else was writing the same stuff, so I decided there was no need for the text to stay. Since TP doesn't allow post deletions I did the next best thing. I then unsubscribed from the thread.

I've had my PM from Kipax and have replied. No harm done, but when you go to the effort of writing detailed and considered replies, only to have them apparently ignored entirely, it is a tad irritating.
