Think I have decided on my lens, so which body?

I'm liking the sound of the Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD ASP and then I can add more lenses at subsequent birthdays and christmas's (I don't need any more than one bottle of perfume). I now need to decide which EOS body to put it on and therefore whether to go new or used. Recommendations?

Nice to see someone starting out taking more interest in the glass than the camera but I have to echo Simon's question. Have you tried both Canon, Nikon et al. to see which handles best for you?

There's nothing wrong with buying used, I've yet to hear of a deal go sour that's been done in this forum.
Go to a shop and hold the bodies, the xxxD are smaller than the XXD so you need to find out how they feel in your hands.
Price wise the 450D is currently priced really well but imho a used 40D would be better value for money than a 500D and the 550D is priced to close to the 50D.
Granted the 550D is using a new AF system but many have said the 50D can give the 7D a run for it's money when it comes to image quality.
Just my tuppence worth :)

I'm tussling between a used 40D and new 550D. I will have the lenses even if I progress on to a better/upgraded body so it seemed sensible to decide on which of those to go for first. I have two friends who love their Canons so was willing to take their recommendation (and also hopefully borrow more specialist lenses to play with before spending any more). Budget is £400 - £600 but there are accessories to buy in with that as well. Performance wise I know way too little at the mo to decide but don't want to kick myself in six months time when the body is frustrating me.

Unless you get frustrated at the size of a xxxD model, you should find that you are happy with the body for quite some time and you will want to invest in lenses before buying another body.
With a budget of £600 the 550D is out of your price range.
If you have made your mind up and decided you want a Canon then price wise you have a choice between either a new or used 1000D/450D/500D or a used 40D.
Things like spare batteries can be bought quite cheaply for these models from the likes of 7days shop.
What models do you friends own and have you tried their cameras?

550d was out of my price range before the £50 cashback thats what led to the quandary!

One friend is just starting out and has an EOS100D which he is enjoying, the other is a professional photographer and has many very expensive camera's that I would not touch (but also many lenses that are not used regularly, new best friend?? ) I've played with Nikon's current range and Canon's in shops and they were all ok apart from ones that had flippy out screen nonsense.

If you can get a used 40D I would. Don't drop loads of cash on an XXXD body.

It does look like the best bang for buck option for a newbie. I've started trawling classifieds, used camera shops stock, fleabay!

My 40D is for sale in the classified section.
I'm going to fixation today to have the sensor cleaned.
I'm then going to Cameraworld, if they don't an offer me acceptable part exchange on a Canon 70-200L F4 IS, then it will still be for sale.

If I was just buying my first DSLR I think that I might actually have a very close look at the Canon 1000D. I've just looked at a site and they have them for £310 and at that price I think it would make a very tempting buy particularly when mated to a quality compact lens.

Sure the handling isn't as good as the xxD bodies but I think there's a lot to be said for a compact and relatively cheap camera that you can put in a bag and take almost anywhere.
