thinking of an upgrade from a D200

Hi all

Had a D200 for a few years now and really love the size and solid feel of it. also the mode controls to hand is something i really like and i have learned so much from it as always use in full manual mode, i do find the ISO a problem at times and have found myself shooting in low light situations with noise becoming an issue when pushing the ISO up..

im not in a postion to spend a fortune so was thinking a D300 or maybe a 300s, i mostly shoot mountain biking (down hill and freeride etc) and as i also ride myself the camera tends to follow me and my riding buddies where ever we go so the camera needs to be rugged.

I guess a 300 will handle higher ISO well and i think the AF is much better but what im asking has anyone done this upgrade and is there any real point in going from a 200 to a 300..

Thanks all and a Merry Christmas

I went from a D200 to a D300s and the focusing, ISO and speed were a huge improvement. The D300s also allowed me to have to cards not just one which was an extra bonus.

thanks very much thats a really useful link and answers most of my questions, im not worried about video as have GoPro pretty much always running so other than a twin card slot i dont think ill gain much with the 300s over the 300...

I went from a D200 to D300. Apart from the points you mention, the D300 handles CA very well and I noticed all my lenses seemed sharper and brighter. I was like having a complete new camera system
I guess the D300s would be even better

Thanks Allanm, its something ive been pondering on for a while now, i will be sorry to see the 200 go though as has been a great camera and been a good friend when out riding and captured some good memories, funny thing is ive managed to teach some of my riding buddies a thing or two so they can use it and shoot me riding too :)

The D300 is definitely a big step up. I think the d200 is a great camera but there are some huge improvements with the 300. To name a few, the auto focus system is excellent. It's only really the d4 that offers something significantly better. The sensor, low iso iq might arguably be better on the d200 but the d300 is far better at higher iso by maybe as much as 2 stops. With care 3200 is usable where as I find anything above 800 on the D200 a problem.

There a few other nice 'modern' touches as well such as live view and my favourite, flash commander which I find very useful. Some of the controls are changed too, most notably the image review controls, zooming etc. There is no dedicated bracketing button but that can be programmed to a function button.

I upgraded from a D200 to D300, and it was well worth the change for me. The AF alone was a big enough improvement, but the improved high ISO performance was also big plus. :)

The larger LCD screen on the D300 made the previously very nice screen (in comparison to the D70 I had before) look like HD compared to standard definition. The Liveview was also very useful for certain situations.

I don't know whether you have seen this site for a comparison of the D200 v D300.

I had an enforced upgrade from D300 to the D300S, and the extra battery slot has come in useful, as has the extra frame per second in camera, but I don't use the video, so that is nothing for me. When I was replacing the D300, a new D300 was actually slightly more expensive   than a new D300S, so it was a no brainer for me.

And the same site for D300v D300S.

thanks for the links.

defo a no brainer i think, will put the 200 in for a service and sensor clean after Christmas and then sell it here or may look into a PX with MPB as they currently have a few 300's instock at the moment one being a very low millage copy..

I added portrait and landscape to my D300. Couldn't manage the D2x upgrade the camera didn't seem to have room in the Set Picture Control section of the menu
