Thinking of Buying 24-70mm f/2.8 - what about my 17-40mm f/4?

Yes
AS the title says - if I buy a 24-70 f/2.8 will I ever use my 17-40mm f/4 or will it gather dust? At the moment I have a gap with my 5D

8-15mm
17-40mm f/4
100mm macro f/2.8
70-300 DO

I propose to bridge the gap with a 24-70 (or perhaps a 24-105 f/4 IS)?

Or perhaps just buy a 50mm f/1.8 - much cheaper!

Any views please?

Apart from the cost, its a MUCH bigger and heavier lens. Its ONLY one stop and the gap from 40-70 isn't THAT big. You could always MOVE forward or back or crop.

A 50mm f1.4 would still be lots cheaper but open up many different areas of opportunity.

Yes - I am tempted this way as I often get shoulder ache with these big lenses - the 24-70 f/2.8 is 800g (3 packs of butter + a bit).

Obvious answer is EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS on a 7D. If your photography is kinda typical, that's the lens you'll use most, and the way to develop a solid lens system is to start with the main workhorse lens and build around it. Hence the Canon trilogies, on full-frame - 24-70/2.8 with 16-25/2.8 and 70-200/2.8, or 24-105/4, 17-40/4 and 70-200/4.

On crop format, the equivalents would be 17-55, 10-22, and 70-200 (or similar, that you already have) but definitely with 17-55 at the heart.

BUT as I said - I have a 5D MkIII.

I did have a 7D + 17-55 f2.8 - that's the root of my problem -

I want a EF17-55 f/2.8 - please!

Oh right, I thought that was a typo given that you have some crop format lenses and 7D listed.

Same basic principle applies though. If 5D3 is your main camera, work around that primarily, with either a 24-70 or 24-105, and accept the compromises with the 7D. Usually a second camera like that is only used as back-up or for specific purpose like maybe action or wildlife where it has some advantages.

I moved from a 7D + 17-55 IS to a 6D + 24-105 and I really missed the F/2.8. I simply had to buy a 24-70 F/2.8 and in the end went for the Tamron 24-70 VC. I love it, it's like having my old 17-55 back o FF but with much better build quality:). The Tamron is a huge leap over the 24-105, being sharper and having less distortion and vignetting at F/2.8 than the 24-105 does at F/4.
