Thinking of trying a sony a77 or an a99 from my canon 7d and 650d
This will be a huge task considering the amount of canon and canon fit glass I have
Really struggled with the 7d, to few keepers, just can't pin it down. Don't get me wrong it can take some perfect shots but it seems more random than any logical settings
perhaps it's just time to jump ship from a life of the canon brand

Come in, the Sony water is lovely :-)

Have you tried some of the 7d books? There does seem to be a black art to setting up the AF to get the best results.

time for a change the 7d is a bit old tech me thinks
If I do turn to the Sony side and I still can't master it I'll sell that and get some paint brushes roflol

I don't regret the switch to the a77, GPS, very clever swivel LCD and all the benefits of a very high res EVF (focus peaking, overlays, seeing exactly what you're about to take etc). As somebody who dislikes editing extensively things like in-camera panoramas, multi frame noise reduction and dynamic range optimiser are things I initially thought were gimmicks, but actually have genuine benefits. Brilliant kit lens as well (16-50mm 2.8).

I think it would be very very difficult to go back to a traditional DSLR now.

been doing some google searching and it seems quite common for converts to say they don't regret it
 
I wouldn't be so quick to jump ship either having read the guestimated spec for the 7D mk2. I appreciate that it is only speculation but CanonRumours are always pretty close with their early info and if it is true then there will be a huge queue for this model as it will be an awesome bit of kit.

The only bad info I can find atm is that it is unlikely to be released until 2014. :'(

If you're facing a big loss from changing to Sony have you considered a 5d3 ?

considered a 5Dmk3 the day they were released
It's not so much the money switching sides midway through the game so to speak
it's the hassle of selling all the canon gear and lenses
in particular the silly offers you get with the statement you have to consider the ebay fees you'd pay so my offer is this xxxx, which is in effect the lowest price they have ever seen one go for - ebay fees and a bit more then they want free delivery
May be it's my age but this really annoys me these days especially when you have priced it right in the first place
Trying to find some sort of camera shop in Staffordshire who stocks sony at the moment for a test drive

The latest issue with the 7d is over exposed shots now that summer has arrived
having to set to -2/3 the 650 d is fine
Just seems to me that the grasping the 7d is a pain in the butt for both me and my eldest son lot of setting and shooting to get the shot

There isn't one from what I remember... nearest place I think with Sony is LCE in Derby. I'd ask them what kind of trade in they'd offer as without ebay fees and hassle it can work out ok. I think FFordes do commission sales so you could avoid ebay that way too.

John Lewis up near Stockport has a few Sony models but often only 1 or 2.

There's also Harrison cameras up in Sheffield. They stock sony and have a reasonable second hand section. Their second hand stuff also comes with a 12 month warranty which is the best I've seen.

There's a stokie with an A99 but I don't know of any with A77s.

At the end of the day, people will only pay what they believe the kit to be worth 2nd hand to them. If the stuff doesn't sell then you've priced it wrong ;) But...you're still more likely to get more privately than you would by part-exchange. One place you could try though is MPB Photographic (for a part exchange price, once you've tried a Sony).

Met Mick a few times down at the reservoir he certainly gets some cracking shots with the A99 with so little effort compared with us and our 7 d
He's a Nikon convert I believe

In two minds to go or not as the guy I spoke to on the phone was a bit ignorant and hard to understand
 
If you are not taking photos in lower light then the A77 is a brilliant camera. A99 is too of course but personally I think the current prices is out of kilter with it's competition. If you were going to spend A99 money then you'd be better off looking at a 5DMk3 or D800.

If you go to the right stores you can get a bargain A77 now and I really do miss some of the features of my A77 which helped me get the shots quicker.

The advantages of the OLED EVF outweigh the disadvantages IMO. Plus the IBIS on Sony bodies mean every lens is stablised. Focus peaking is absolutely awesome for manual focusing and invaluable for video work. So easy.

If the pricing of the A99 was a bit better I'd have happily bought one. But it wasn't and I was seduced by a D700 in my desire to go FF and haven't looked back since. Part of me still regrets parting with my A77 and maybe one day I'll get one back just to use as a casual camera for family outings.

I'd probably go over to Harrisons in Sheffield then. They've got the A77 and the A99 and they do canon and nikon too so you can get your mitts on everything.
 
I have the a77 and a55, I do like em. I've only briefly used a nikon dslr in comparison, I liked that too.

but I'm guessing its workflow differences that you would be interested in, I like how I can jump seemlessly from lcd to eyepiece :-)
 
Just got back from LCE in Manchester
what a helpful old chap and very knowledgeable
He even got us out a brand new 5dk3 to play with
nearly came away with an a77 and 16-50 lens but the parking ticket running out beckoned
and he was a tad dear I was in negotiations when we had to leave or possibly loose the car

Took some ef canon lens with me to play with hoping they'd get a 5d mk3 out oooooh I was tempted to get my money out, loved the 5d mk3
tried it with my ef 70-200 f2.8L IS my ef 24-105 f4 l
and of course a nifty 50
The sony was a strange camera very capable but a bit red dwarf very fast focus interesting camera
Going to sleep on it but my plan is to replace my 650d with an a77 and the 7d with a 5dmk3 however by tomorrow all that may have changed lol

I don't mean it in a bad way the flippy out twiddly screen just seemed odd and something about it reminded me of Cryton off red dwarf

As I said earlier think I'll swap my 650d for the Sony A77 and swap the 7d for a 5d mk3
obviously I will be limited now on lenses and have to buy some sony ones
Think I'll get the a77 with the 16-50 see how I get on If I love it I'll sell the 650d and get some more sony lenses
