Thinking of getting a 60D again... or maybe a 700D?

Hi,

**warning fluffy preamble - skip to the last paragraph if you're short on time :D**

I'm considering a 60D (was considering the 70D but not at the moment as I don't have the cash) - the reasons I'm thinking of it are:

More reach - the x1.6 can come in handy
Actuating screen for macro

I used to have a 60D and thought it very good, but sold as part of my upgrade to my current body, but when it comes to macro being restricted to the flat is a bit annoying, plus having taken my first macro in a while the other day I wasn't too happy - full x5 on the MP-E65 and I wasn't anywhere near as close as I was used to back when I had the 60D.

Anyway as I mentioned I had considered the 70D - both for movies (the pull focus looks great), plus basically having a 7D with all the bits I loved from the 60D is a win win - but as I said cash isn't flowing and until I sell the HiLite I don't even have the cash for the 60, let along the extra for the 70.

So now my life stories over I was wondering how do the newer XXXD series fare, I've not had one since the 500D and now they have the lovely screens etc should I consider one of those?

What do you guys think?

Perhaps I should have asked this in the macro section, but I was looking for wider opinion, especially as second hand they;re very much the same price.
 
Hi John, I had a 60D and it's a great camera as you know and the wife has a 650D which I've used quite a few times and it's also a very capable camera, I'm just more used to the ergonomics of the xD and xxD bodies. The screen on the 650D makes it great for macro and as it's basically a 700D without a couple of bit and bobs that were added. The 650D's also quite a bargain now as the price has dropped when the 700D came out.

After all that though, I've now got a 70D and IMHO it would be worth the wait to save up to get one. I've had a few crop bodies, a 550D, 60D, two 7D's and used the 650D, and the 70D has them all beat for functionality and features and would be well worth the wait.
 
I just set up an ISA with my bank to save for a 70D. All going well, I should have one in three months :) ( just an idea in case you hadn't thought of it)
 
Thanks for the advice, but do I really need the 70D, there also is the other points of family and not being able to save for toffee.

I know if I had the money it's what I'd go for but I don't, technically until I sell the HiLite I don't have the cash for the other either but I've not doubt eBay will take it even if no-one here does.
 
If you're not bothered about it being an import the 70D is already substantailly cheaper at Panamoz, Digital Rev in HK or Hdew cameras in the UK. You'll get great service from any one of them.
 
Aye, I'd seen - around 700, but best leave the P word out of here before it breaks out into a customs argument ;)
 
If you fancy a bit of a trip you'd be welcome to come over and have a play with my 70D to see how you get on. I'm near Lincoln, so not a million miles away from you.
 
lol, that is close - but I'd be an expensive trip, £10 for fuel, £700+ for the camera and how much for the divorce ;)

Well - the HiLites gone - £280 in pocket - so... for macro (and maybe video if the 650D is anywhere near as good video wise as the 70D) and reach - should it be the 60D or 650D?

I think both are around £350 second hand.
 
Well I've done some more research and I'll be going for the 60D, well until the 70D becomes silly cheap :)

Good choice John, I'm sure you'll be happy with the 60D. I swapped my 60D for a 7D and regretted it to be honest. I wanted the better AF system of the 7D but wish I'd kept the 60D for its IQ. There's not much difference between the 60D and the 650D in IQ and the only features of the 650D that trump the 60D is the touchscreen and an extra stop of ISO, but the 60D has better ergonomics, faster shutter speed better noise handling to make up for the stop of ISO.
 
Me too, I used to have the 7D, sold it because of the noise and got the 60D and it was so much better, when I was researching last night I was thinking over all teh things said and given I've the 5D I'd feel a little lost without that thumb wheel - then I found out its the same batteries and connections then there were just too many pluses to ignore.

That and I had the funny idea that the 650D would do decent pull focus, but from what I've seen its a million miles from the stuff the 70D does, so all in all I'll "rent" (aka buy now and sell in a year or so and consider each pound lost as monthly rent :)) then get a 70D when they're nice and cheap and a second hand market comes up.
 
lol, well unless one pops up in the next hour I'll stop net crawling and just buy new - it'll increase the "rental" but I'm spending too much time refreshing classified, trawling ebay, facebook etc :)
 
Job jobbed, all ordered - thanks all again, I've no doubt in the future I'll have a 70D, but for now GAS is sated!
