thinking of getting a flash

Yes
it's recently dawned on me that i really ought to be getting a half decent flash for my d90 in the not to distant future. I've never used flash before...know very little about it aside from watching a few videos on youtube on fill flash and bouncing flash etc. I think given that i'm going to be doing a wedding in a few months and would like to take my photography to the next level, a flash is most certainly in order.

so can any wise souls guide me in my choice and if anyone knows of a pukka guide for using flash etc then please point me in the right direction.

I don't really want to go all out and get the most expensive one but i also don't want to skimp to much so am prepared to get something fairly good that should last me for a while.

Thanks!

If you are shooting a wedding then I'd be looking at a high end Nikon flash if not two.

This is an excellent site for info on all things flash related:

don't want to jump right in and get two right away...

would something like an SB-600 be a good first flash? I've been reading some very good reviews of it and it seems to fill my needs i reckon.

thanks for the link btw

I have a D90 and I needed a flash for taking indoor low light dancing shots (using it bounced with a 50mm 1.8). I got the SB600 and am happy with it. Still a lot to learn about it myself.

I'm shooting a wedding in a few months too - good point about having two flashes, I'll maybe see if I can borrow/hire a second one for the day then I can have one on each body (borrowing another D90)

did you consider the sb800? i'm torn between the two...reckon i might very well just end up getting whichever one appears next on the classifieds here!

I did consider it though it was actually the newer version SB900 I tried and it was bigger and heavier - the SB600 felt more balanced on a D90, especially when teamed with a light prime lens. (I think the SB800 is lighter than the SB900.)

If its your first flash then the 900 is far more user friendly than the 800. No experience of the 600 but suspect its the same.

but the 900 looks pretty massive in comparison to the 600...don't know how off putting that would be! Plus there's the additional cost to bear in mind..
