Thinking of Switching to Nikon.

Ok guys here's what happen's. Im 15, i can't afford good glass, or cameras, or other equipment. I LOVE my cameras, i go out after school most days and most weekend with my Camera and shoot. I'm shooting a 300D and 1D these are the best cameras i could get, and i have them because i like the way they work. I went with Canon in the beggining because thats what my dad shoots, so i can use his len's.

Now, i recently got some old M42 SLR's and Primes. Namely a 58mm and 135mm and a adaptor for them to put them on my Canons. I LOVE them, i haven't used my Canon EF len's since. I really like how simple they are, and how you can get such amazing pictures of out, lets face it. Cheap gear.

Im thinking about selling it all, and switching to Nikon. Because they kept the Same Len's mount, so all the old Nikon Len's work, even if they are MF or don't meter. I can guess my settings pretty well now, and if i'm wrong i will be only a stop or two out or whatever.

So would it be cheeper for me to sell my stuff, Get a 2nd hand Nikon body and but up in old primes that way?

Sorry this post isn't very well though out and its more than likely that it doesn't make sense :)
 
Up to you really. If you go to Nikon you're limiting yourself to only Nikon glass, and as you said there are a few that won't even meter. Canon's will meter with anything stuck on the front and there is a far wider range of mounts you can get adapters for to mount to Canon. These include Nikon, Pentax K, Penxtax M42 and a few other obscure Russian lenses. Pretty much the only lens you can't mount to Canon EOS is Canon FD :thinking:
 
Why?

If it's not AF or automatic aperture control, the old nikkor lenses will work just as well on canon (adapted) than they would on a nikon body.
Plus canon is a far more adaptable mount for other lenses. Your M42 lenses won't work on nikon without a piece of glass to let them infinity focus, which will either be expensive or degrade quality.

The only advantage you'd get from moving over would be the old nikkor lenses that have automatic aperture or AF.
 
Don't want to confuse you more but there are lots of nice old Minolta lenses out there :D

Stick with what you've got.

It seems that a change to Nikon to utilise its old lenses isn't actually that good an idea because they give you nothing more than what you currently have, and if anything, you won't have the selection and some won't meter. You'd have just swapped system to buy Nikon glass when you say this old gear gear whacked on the front of a Canon (via an adaptor) is fun to use and cheap AND gives you the results you want. Seems you're on the right track already.

The probable solution in terms of upgrading bodies is to chop in both yours and move to something like a used 1DII, but all that's effectively going to give you is more pixels and a bit of AF tech that's useless on MF lenses.

You're happy - stick with it and continue having fun :)

BTW, it's refreshing to hear you doing this - most kids would want the best AF body and lenses. You don't. I like the cut of your jib :thumbs:
 
I agree with specialman 100%. If it ain't broke don't fix it, and your setup ain't broke. Nor is your attitude.

Plus ... if you like the way your Canons work, it's possible that Nikons would really annoy you. Everything on them is the wrong - sorry, other! - way round. I sometimes think that the ability to comprehend a Canon or a Nikon must have some genetic component, like a blood group - you might be Type A or Type B, but only a few people are Type AB!
 
Why not sell the EF lenses if you're not using them, then spend the money on more esoteric glass?

Also as a Nikon user it pains me to say it, but I'd stick with what you've got. The only real benefit you'd get from moving to Nikon is experience of using Nikon, and as Stewart says, you might not get on with the system or ergonomics.

Is there not a raft of fantastic old cheap Canon MF primes waiting for someone who doesn't want AF?

No, canon changed their lens mount when they went electronic.
Old FD lenses are actually pretty much the only type of lens you can't use on new canon with an adapter! (I believe some repair shops will convert the mount for a price though, but that takes some of the point out of cheap lenses).

But by way of compensation, the EF mount is very adaptable to other mounts.

I'm a southpaw so perhaps that's why I prefer NIKON :lol:

Ok no. Keep your canon brand that you (obviously) like, and see whether you can pick up a second hand body of a newer and better model?

You can always sell/part ex the current bodies to put towards it, you get to keep the lenses you are using (or also put in the ones you aren't for sale/part ex). Check out the adapters, see whether you can use the older nikon/other lenses with them.
 
Thanks guys! This has really given me some more info :) Didn't realise that Canon was much better for adaptors! I really believe that you can get some good pictures from cheap old stuff :) If Film wasn't so expensive i'd shoot it, but alas it is! So think i will carry on hammering on with my canons. Looking at a few len's already! I guess with the Nikon stuff not all of it has aperture rings?

Nikon D lenses have aperture rings, newer G one's don't.


Great to see another teenage photographer :).
 
You're obviously curious about using Nikon - so why not give that curiousity some expression and try to borrow one for a while? then you can decide for yourself, through your own experience. We can learn a lot from other people's experiences and views, but nothing can replace learning from our own!!
 
stick with what your used to and happy with. Sometimes switching to a different brand u will find it awkward how dials and various settings work. Plus you seem to sound happy with what you have atm
