The sensor will blow you away. Particularly in terms of noise handling and shadow detail. A few other nice modern features too but....
You might get a tiny bit frustrated with the control system. Most shooting options are changed in the menu on the D5300 rather than via direct controls. Depends how you shoot as to whether that will frustrate.
An alternative might be a D7000 for I guess similar money.

Depends what lenses you have, the D3000 / 5000 series cameras don't have a inbuilt focus motor, so if you have all the new type nikon lenses then its no problem, but if you've got the old style lenses, then you'll only be able to manual focus. Personally you would be better off trying to source a D7000 or 7100 because these bodies will take both types of lenses. The ones with and without focus motors in the lenses.

I've recently upgraded from a D40 to a D5300 ... and I'm pleased. It depends on what kind of shooting you do, but what I immediately found most useful was the live preview on a flip-out screen. I don't know the D80 so can't really help.
