Third party batteries

I'm away for a week in August staying at a campsite where there is limited electricity as you might have guessed. The only option is leaving things to charge at the farm house and I think I would be tempted to stand there guarding my batteries for fear they would be taken. More to the point, whilst batteries are charging what do I use to take photos!

I have the choice of either purchasing the genuine Nikon batteries for the D300s and D5000 or 3rd party ones for 1/3 of the price. Thats a big difference and presumably there is a reason for it?

Has anyone got any advice or history with 3rd party batteries.. are they just as good or a waste of time?

Thanks

My third parties (ebay jobs from HK) were fine for about 2 years then almost completely stopped holding charge. I certainly wouldn't be scared of them, but maybe don't trust them with shoots you consider to be hugely important.

@TomB - Thank you for your advice. I will certianly think more carefully about whether it's best to spend the extra.

I've been using Phottix batteries from Etefore on Ebay in my cameras (Nikon dslrs and the Canon G9 + G10) for years now without any problems

I use 7Dayshop ones in my Canon and have had no issues, they hold plenty of charge.

Ditto.

I bought 2 Phottix Titan batteries for my D700 and they hold their charge at least as well as the equivalent Nikon. I got both for approx. half the price of a single Nikon-branded one. I'm very happy with them.

I have a 3rd party battery, bought from 7Dayshop about 3-4 years ago. No problems whatsoever with it!

I have also bought 3rd party batteries from 7day shop. They only really held full charge for about 2 years but they are as cheap as chips so I have a whole load and just chuck them out when they start to die which is not a problem with a few spares always on hand. Also I have a 3rd party charger which plugs in to the mains and car for the price of a couple of magazines, everyone should have one as it also means you can charge up your batteries twice as fast.

Thanks everyone for suggestions. Seeing as I'm normally okay for battery life on shoots and this is rare that I'm away from electricity then I don't think I need to spend best part of £30 on the real deal. I'm liking the idea of the in car chargers and 3rd party batteries. Problem solved :)
