Hi all.

I am looking at buying a Canon 70-200mm f4 IS L and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with third party tripod mounts for these lenses.

Call me scrooge but, £80-£90 for a small ring is a bit much, even for Canon

Ebay seem to have loads of third party mounts for around £10-£20

TIA Elliott

I recommend getting the lens first and deciding if you need one. It only weighs 760 gms and it isn't very long. It is quite well balanced on a XD or XXD, less so on a XXXD

I've heard that some of the cheaper ones can mark the paint so if you do go down that road try and get one of the better models. Perhaps somebody here has a supplier they can recommend.

I have a cheapo one on that same lens, This one, £13 from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tripod-Moun...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1246929793&sr=1-1

It's moot as to whether you need one on that lens, but it's a bit wobbly without. The lens isn't very heavy, but it's quite long. I was happy with this tripod collar until I thought about it a bit more. It looks fine, if relatively crudely finished. I don't think it will mark the lens if used sensibly. The paint doesn't match exactly, if you are a poser ;)

But the bit I didn't like is that the tripod bush is just tapped into the plain alloy metal, which means you have a lot of money hanging off just a couple of tiny light-metal threads. Really not a good idea if you've got it mounted vertically. You will notice that the Canon original has a steel insert for the tripod bush.

I've fixed this by drilling straight through the foot and bolting a quick-release plate directly to the collar, secured with a fat nut. It suits me fine, as I don't use it on a tripod much. If I did, I think I'd shell out for the pukka version.

Where are you getting one for £80? I'll have one at that!

Thanks for the info HoppyUK,

Here is a link to the Canon collar. Its from a company called Digital Rev in HongKong.

I've used them quite a few times and they are very reliable.
I would love to get my lens from them, but I am concerned about warranty issues with canon should something go wrong (Don't want to have to send the lens back to Hong Kong), but for smaller things I use them no problem.

Cheers for the link :) Digital Rev have a good rep, and that collar is £120 at WEX!

Have you heard of kerso? He's a small independent trader on here with a good reputation, gets stuff from the US, full international warranty. I bought my 70-200 4 IS from him a couple of weeks ago for £799 + £10 RMSD.

You can PM him from here under the name kerso or email kerso1123@msn.com I think that price beats Digital Rev after you've been clobbered for VAT?

Thanks HoppyUK,

I just won a 70-200 f4 IS L on eBay for £700.00 Mint condition only been used a few times with the remainder of a 7 year MACK warranty.

Can't wait to get my hands on it :woot:

I'll keep kerso in mind, The next lens is a 24-105mm f4 IS (Oh photography is SOOOOO expensive)
