THIS is why you should always use a UV filter

Yes
I've had my 17-40 f/4 L for a while now and have been using a HOYA UV filter on it most of the time. When I got my 70-200 f/2.8 L I moved the filter to that becuase it's worth more (almost twice the price and it's my fav lens, use it more than anything else).

Turns out that was a bit of a mistake. I always use a hood on my 70-200 so it's well protected so I moved the UV filter off, was planning to move it onto m 17-40 but didn't get around to it.

Got a lovely big scratch on the front of my 17-40 now

Looks like quite a deep one too:

Looks like i'm gonna have to get it recoated. Sucks :(

I do have insurance, got Photoguard. Might give them a ring and claim on it.

who ever did that must of noticed! maybe the just didnt tell ya!

:bonk:i just took mine of today after everyone going on about not needed...

I`m just careful with expensive stuff.

do you use lens caps? just curious to know how you managed this if you keep the lens cap on when not using:shrug:(obviously without knowing)

I'm really carefull with my kit, I always use front and rear lens caps, have never lost one and will never put a lens back in my bag without caps on. Dunno how I managed to scratch my 17-40, never damaged any of my kit in the slightest before.

does it actually make any difference to the images though?

NO! YES!.......it has been thrashed to death afore........

I have had 2 skylight filters broken/scratched over the years, both saved the lens though, I'd argree they are worth the investment. Wayne

Think he may have meant the scratch not the filter... I maybe wrong though.

Hmmmm.........never thought about that............:coat:

:D

The scratch could cause problems at higher apertures (like f/11 and above). I've not noticed anything yet though.

For clarity:wave:, I did mean the scratch.

You could always get the damaged section changed at a repair shop ie fixation, lehmanns. Should only be about £150.

Better check your excess on your policy if you go by insurance and see if they'll let you know the damage now come renewel time.

ouch!!!! That must have hurt... :(

Ouch!! If nothing else it'll hurt it's resale value, glad the photos haven't been affected so far though!
