This lens any good?

Hi everyone!

I have a d3100 with the standard 18-55mm lens. Was looking around and came across this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-55-20...61X0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326309582&sr=8-1

Would anyone recommend this? It's come down in price saving £190!,

The thread quoted by andyred was started by me and my lens should arrive tomorrow. At that price it looks like a steal and would compliment your 18-55 perfectly.

You'll have to post back on here when you've had a play around with it and post some pics please.
That price was for a vr, I don't have vr so the one for my camera is even cheaper

But yeh let me know how you get on.

I've still got the old verson of that lens without the VR and have had some fairly good results from it. I don't use it as much now as I've got a Sigma 150-500.

I kept it as it always worked well with the D40 which I still have as its lighter than the D90 for taking on holiday.

Will try and root some images out for you.

Ok, found these, all animals I'm afraid.

Its not a particularly fast lens but I found it lightweight and a good lens to use in conjunction with the kit one to learn with. The D40 wth those two lenses was my only kit for 2-3 years after which I wanted to start upgrading.

I have this lens with my D80 and am very happy with the results. When I am out and about use this lens the most.

Also got the 55-200 lens, find it a great lens. I had the non VR model until recently when the motor in the lens packed up. Now bought the VR model from Amazon - no complaints.

It's a great wee lens for the
money, but don't be fooled by the supposed £190 price drop, it's always been available for around that price.

The lens does the VR, not the camera so there's nothing to stop you benefitting from the VR version.

tack sharp lens, good VR, mediocre bokeh, great for the price. Personally I sold mine because for me anything over 50mm is all about the bokeh. Picked up 80-200 2.8... good for bokeh but not sharp... now I'm going for manual focus primes in the 105mm+ range... best of both worlds, tack sharp and good bokeh.

Thanks everyone or their advice!! I have read on ken rockwells website aswell and he rates it in his top ten Nikon lenses.
The thing is now wether to get the VR lens or the non VR, as I have heard as I'm a beginner at photography I won't really need the VR lens and I won't notice the difference, is this true?

Get the VR. There is no telling when it will come in handy and if you're not using the lens on a tripod, it will come in handy. Been using this lens for two years and I couldn't imagine how some of the shots would have worked without image stabilisation.

Mine isn't VR but they weren't making a VR version when I bought mine.

If it was me buying again I'd go for the VR.

This is true, I bought mine new from amazon for £140ish in late 2008, pretty sure the price hasn't gone up since then!
