This may be a dumb Q but...which filter size

Hi

I have a the ES-62 Lens Hood on my Canon 50mm 1.8 and wanted to try out a cople of filters on there too.

My question is does the '62' refer to the new filter diameter i need to get?

sorry if these seems to be an obvious question

Look on the back of the lens cap to the lens, this will tell you the filter size.
50, 1.8s are usually around 52mm.
 
ok thanks. so the lens hood adapter that screws into the lens doesn;t change the size of the filter needed then?

Then its a stupid design. You'll have to make sure you buy filters with a thread on the other side, so you can screw the lens hood into the filter.
Or just not bother with the hood/filters at the same time.
 
The 50mm f/1.8 is an anomaly - because it's so cheap they didn't add a proper bayonet to the end of it for hood attachments, so they cheat and the hood screws into the filter thread, so you'd have to remove the hood, attach the filter then screw the hood into the filter's own threads.

I don't know of any other Canon lens that works this way tbh.
 
I think the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 is the same, not sure about the 50mm.

I'd guess the problem then maybe though that the hood is shifted forward enough to bring it into the field of view.

Possibly, I dont have one to try, so cant comment on that.
 
you'd think it would bring it into the field of view but it doesn't. i'll take a pic tonight with it and also take a pic of the adapter that screws into the lens' thread.

The lens hood itself is pretty cheap for the 50mm aswel I spose so perhaps it just doesnt give maximum coverage?
