No
but then some may say it is a matter of a dud battery.

Anywayz, to cut a long storey short ....

Last month I attended the Ingleton TP learn together meet, and my camera (Canon EOS 1000D) got a tad wet.

A few days after the event my camera would not work (absolutely dead).

So at the advice of some TP friends I stripped the camera of lens, battery & card and wrapped it in kitchen roll and burried in a tub of rice.

After a few days the camera camea to life and even managed over 500 shots at another TP meet 2 weeks ago.

But this week I went to use the camera and there is 'NO GO'!

So now it is a process of elimination as to what could be causing the problem.

I begrudge having to buy another battery (just to check if that is the problem).

So I am hoping there may be a fellow TP member in the Accrington area who also uses a LP-E5 battery pack (apparently used in 1000D's and 450D's, and maybe other cameras that I am not aware of) who will be willing to help me test whether it is the battery, i.e., by testing my fully charged pack in their camera or their battery in my camera to see if the power is the probs.

Failing which it may be a case of me having to send my camera for repair (which I hope not as it could be very expensive and not worthwhile) or just canning the £350 as a lesson learned and resorting to my good old faithful Kodak EasyShare DX4530 until I have saved enough pennies for another DSLR

So if there is anyone out there willing to take a chance on me sorting out my camera, I would be eternally greatful :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

Dawn does the battery charge in the charger ?

What actually happens when the camera is powered up ?

Hiya Chris,

As you know, from the Chester Zoo meet, my camera was in full swing.

The battery charges fine in the charger, to full power.

But when I put it in the camera and switch it on there is absolutely **** all happen.

Dead as a door nail!

What I can't understand is that the same battery powered the cam for a really good full 7 hour session at the Chester Zoo meet?

And then nothing?

It is really ****ing me off, and I am having serious photography withdrawls at the mo

Not to mention I am on leave at the end of the week for 2.5 weeks. So this is going to drive me mad!!!!

I need to get it sorted a.s.a.p.!

Otherwise I might be out there 'beg-steel-borrow' for a camera to take pics on my jollies

It's unlikely to be the battery in such a new camera, does it power up at all?
Hiya Graham,

The camera did power up after the 'wet' and dry out incident and I took loads of shots last week. It was a bit iffy for the weeks following the Ingleton Falls meet, but was on it's way and in top form.

I am really baffled by this

I will be in Rossendale tommorow and can bring a battery with me if that will help. Not sure what time yet.

Dawn

I have a friend in Ossy with a 450D, sure I could get the battery for a couple of hours, but, as posted above, it's highly unlikely to be a battery.

Does it charge, ie lights change colour or flash differently (not sure what charger you have)

Does camera do anything...power up...blink anything or simply deceased?

Moisture is a curious beast when it comes to electronics, not sure of the rice trick, may depend on were it was kept, ie cold place and once it warmed up moisture has put it back to square one?

Cheers Ron, that would be a great help. I will PM you contact details.

Ossie is much closer, cheers

I just want to eliminate the power/battery being the problem before I take further action, especially as the camera has worked since the Ingleton Falls meet.

It may be that there is water residue/deposit on the contacts somewhere in the camera, but that could happen anywhere, not necessarily in rain, it could have happend even in the 'butterfly house' at the zoo.

OMG photography is proving to be a very expensive hobby, not only regards equipment .... but my patience too!!!!

All I can do is

otherwise I would go :cuckoo:

Dawn, if it is buggered I can loan you my A590IS for your holiday. It's only a P+S but I'm quite impressed by it.

Thanks Michael for the very kind and generous offer, I would probs love to get my hands on your camera offer, but knowing me and my bad luck with the weather I would hate to destroy another camera

Doesn't the 1000D have a date/time battery as well. I have heard these can cause problems.

They are usually in a vertical slot next to the main battery.

What I have found that may help if the internal battery got moisture in it as the camera will not work if this battery is flat or shorted. I think you can ignore step 1.

1. Carefully clean the 8 gold colour lens contact pins on the camera body lens mount with a pencil eraser. Do this while holding the camera so that any eraser dust will not fall into the camera.

2. Take out both batteries (there are 2). The smaller Date/Time battery is by the main one (in a vertical slot). Also remove the CF memory card.

3. With the batteries removed, turn the camera switch on for 3-5 minutes. Apparently this clears the memory.

4. Turn the camera off and put the batteries and CF card back in.

5. Re-attach the lens and turn it back on.

Maybe worth a try if it got wet.

Dawn, it's only a camera, if it breaks, it breaks. Let me know and I can have it in the post tomorrow or Thursday so you would have it on Friday morning.

Thanks, I will try that (clutching at straws)
