Recently I've sold my nikon 18-70 kit lens and bought the Tokina 28-70 f2.8 ATX PRO SV.

The lens is great and i like the image quality etc compare to the nikon but i guess you all know that i will miss the wide angle.

No prob with that, i just go buy a wide angle lens.

Recent to upgrade is because i want to get rid of my DX lens so when i go full frame i can use all my lens.

Anyway, back to the question.

After looking at some wide angle lens i quite like the 17-35 range which is wide enough for me, even for crop sensor format.

i was looking at the Sigma 17-35mm and the price is pretty cheap but the 18-50 f2.8 pretty much the price.

If optic is similar i might as well buy the 18-50 f2.8 and use it as wide angle and also a backup for my 28-70?

hmm I think they have a 12-24mm too might be worth it as it won't overlap your current lens.
There is a sigma 10-20mm
I thought I saw one of 14-24mm (just browsing through a hire company for ideas... here

Depends on budget and whether you want to overlap the ranges...

There is also:
samyang 8mm (fisheye), 14mm prime
or various brands at different settings on prime. Although those lenses may cost a bit.
You could try looking here for ideas of wide lenses.
 
samyang 8mm fish eye is definate something on my list but i would prefer a normal wide angle instead of fish eye wide.

the thing is i need to use wide sometimes but not too often so is hard to spend all the dosh on one expensive wide lens which i may not even be using.
 
good job you mention about that. Didn't read on the sigma 18-50 is a DX lens.

Reconsider my thought then lol.

Basically anything 18-50ish will be a standard zoom DX lens (as this replicates the standard zoom 24-70 range on FX).

Anything that is 18-35ish will be an FX lens (Ultrawide zoom on FX)
 
i guess i have to think then.

If i get full frame camera my DX will be second camera, so i guess the 18-50 will be fine.
