Researchers at Harvard University have developed an entirely new way of correcting chromatic aberration. If and when it's applied commercially, it could have an enormous impact on lens design, in the direction of making lenses smaller, lighter, and less complex.

I don't know how long it takes to commercialise things like this, but I'd imagine a few years.
