So sorry for yet another thread on 70-200 whoever has read my prevouis 3

So havent decided which to get for 70-200 yet and its driving me :bang: I even dream of them :shrug:

So so far

Canon 70-200 2.8 mk 2 is too exp

Canon IS mk 1 is exp for a 2nd hand IMO rather go for new plus didnt get any uck with buying 1 anyway

Canon 70-200 non IS: not very practical. Cant shoot below 320 shutter which kills the scope of 2.8 IMO

My current chioce 70-200 IS f4: Havent ordered it yet.. am waiting.. non 2.8 is really freaking me out but if nothing more its this lens

anything else is a no consideration

my budget stands at NOT MORE then 1k.

Found me the SIGMA OS version which looks nice yet never seen anyone here swear by it and the Sigma part kinda freaks me out.

How many times have I read about Sigma's elite lenses: A great lens IQ smashes Canon and nikon, built as a tank, just 1 minor thing, as soon as U receive it and open it and happy with it make sure to pack it up again and send it to sigma so they will fix it for u cause the thing simply cant focus if if its infront of it.

For me sending it back is NOT an option.

So anyone had issues with them or heard bad things about them. Are they soft at 2.8 or at 200 like the non IS one? I sure havent heard anything bad about the Canon f4

there are a lot of these threads at the moment :-)

all i will say is that i've got the 70-200 f2.8 non is. i love it. it's true that you will need a shutter speed of around 1/320 or more, but the iq, sharpness and contrast is amazing all through the range.

its not about shooting with 2.8 for bokee but rather shooting in the dark... + i can be a bit of a human vibrator :)

If your shooting in low light then the advantages of using an F2.8 without IS lens far exceed the advantages of using an F4 with IS, you being a vibrator can be countered by raising the ISO or even using a monopod or tripod.
Remember IS or OS is there to counter camera shake only, it does not let more light in, so in low light faster apertures will always win.


The canons are sharper than the sigma's, the sigma's are known to have QC issues that means some need to be sent back to sort back or front focusing issues, the canons as a rule don't.

I shoot perfectly well indoors, in low light all of the time, I hand hold and use a tripod and don't even own a lens with IS.
I learnt a while back that the faster aperture alone is worth more than all the bells and whistles that can help counter camera shake.

If you want IS, then get a MK1, yes its expensive for second hand but look at the price of the MK2 that you cant afford.. if not get the non IS F2.8 and with the money saved get a decent light weight tripod and/or monopod.

I already own both a mono and a tri both manfrotto but they can be a bit of a handicap :)

The human vibrator thing really came from shooting macro with the 100 2.8 heard also that the weight of the canon non IS will stabilize it a bit

As for the sigma I read a review and it was passed as an ok good lens but not awesome like its canon counterparts.

Why the best of both worlds had to be so expensive :( ?
 
It depends what you're shooting! If it moves, then no amount of IS will make up for a low shutter speed and blurred subject, if it doesn't move, then the IS could be a great help!
 
both moving and non moving, in light and low light but decission has been made and final.... canon 70-200 2.8 non is

as much as the f4 is good that extra stop is *** i need and was simply making up excuses for it to justify myself

if you can wait then arkady is supposed to be getting some of the new sigma OS lenses to test?

im not sure ive seen anyone on here buy the OS model yet so its hard to say what it will be like.

Pro spec lenses from Canon and Nikon hold their value well- especially when they are as popular as the 70-200 variants are. It sounds like the amount of depreciation you expect is against what the market bears.

MPB have a mint 70-200 f2.8IS for £1099 with 6 months warranty and someone else has already made sure it works. For an extra £100 on your budget seems ideal for the peace of mind and performance this lens offers.

Not in total agreement with the bit about viable shutter speeds with non-IS lenses. Good technique will allow you to shoot down to slower speed than that. :)

yeps i knows.. shot the macro 100 at shutter 50 with good results unless im shooting macro hand held :)



@Dr0 It was more a case that not many were ready to ship my way thus more a case of sour grapes :)
