Thoughts on Canon 70-300mm L 4-5.6 IS USM

I just got hold of a Canon 70-300mm L 4-5.6 IS USM Zoom lens, What is your thoughts on this lens? i need a Zoom lens for general pupose with good quality optics. Reviews say this is a real good lens but when i look around forums and stuff almost all photographers blab on about getting low light zoom lenses like 70-200mm f2.8 which for the canon non IS version is about the same price or i could go for the f4 70-200 IS but is it realy any much better to have the constant apature instead of the extra zoom reach? I cant make my mind up.

Tough call m8, you really need to establish how much (if any) low available light shooting you do and are the subjects likely to be moving or not? I think most people eventually end up with a 200mm f2.8 sooner or later, but for now personally I'd be going for the extra reach.

The 70-200 non IS is still a lot more expensive than the 70-300. The 70-300 is a great lens for the price, I used to love mine.

The 70-200 L series lenses are far superior, quicker af, sharper etc but then come at a premium cost.

Read the OP, he's talking about the 70-300 L which is about 150 quid more than the 70-200 non IS.

The 70-300 L is a seriously good lens so if you need the reach get it. It's also compact and takes up less room in your bag than a 70-200 f2.8 (it's also significantly lighter).

ISO handling on the newer camera bodies is so good now that unless you need the D.O.F that f/2.8 gives then it's just not worth the extra money for an L, as that lens you've got is pretty good. Unless as Ryan said you want sharper shots and faster AF. I think the 70-200 f/2.8 is standard kit for sports and wedding photographers.

The lens the OP has IS an L series! To the OP, if you already have the lens, go out and use it, and stop worrying!
