Yes
i noticed a long time ago the tiff setting on my cam
i tried it the other day and the shot was pretty big...with a little file attached
is this in some way useable as RAW would be
i would like to improve the pre jpeg quality of my images..more apparent sharpness and edge definition
what say you chaps?
cheers

There's absolutely no point shooting TIFF. Shoot top quality JPG or RAW instead. TIFF is a legacy format. RAW is infinitely preferable.

Tiff has it's uses at times. It's an uncompressed format that's been around for years. The file sizes can be enormous though.
I usually shoot in raw, sometimes turn it into Tiff to re-size and work on it, and then into jpg. At which point I usually delete the Tiff file anyway.

your better to convert files to TIFF after processing, shoot in RAW first then save out your files as TIFF, this is better for having files for printing or sending to customers

You should be able to export from Raw at 16bit tiff. I do my adjustments and save the 16bit tiff as a final. ... I'll convert to JPG only for print or showing on here.

so its RAW i really need to step up to...
what do i expect then...i need some better software...
then when all is said and done and we need 6x4 prints for the album..jpeg
and show online..jpeg and 200kb etc controls
without an outlet for big prints and a call for my photography to be used commercially
should i not put RAW in the choice of next camera list...even I/S seems to have some drawbacks
i dont want to over buy just because there is a market trend
i have already come to the conclusion 10Mp may be too much for my needs
thanks

So your camera only does tiffs then Geof? ...missed that the first time.

I think the quality of your tiffs would be pretty high, made directly from the raw as uncompressed as possible would be ideal.
I don't know your system so can't advise how much more you'd get going for a camera with raw. ...not a massive amount I'd guess….good glass would make more difference.

Raw does give you more flexibility processing wise, you can push it a stop or two, but I think the detail and quality of tiffs is very comparable.

10mp would seem plenty from here too ...I’m thinking if your shooting tiffs then no sharpening may be being applied… just a thought.
…. I've only ever shot in jpeg with in camera sharpening, which was fine …but now I shoot raw which needs several sharpens during processing, through tiff, before they’re the same as the jpegs printing wise. …possibly the same with your tiffs.
