Hello All,

Had a quick search about but couldnt seem to find anything much that explains what tilt and shift is exactly... I know it has been used for creating almost miniature model like images, but what actually is their purpose...

Sorry if this question is asked a lot or has been before, i'm just intrigued!!

Cheers mate, ill have a look through that now!

Quickly,

Shift changes the perspective and can allow seamless panoramas to be made, Tilt changes the focal plane.

Have a look here , here, here and here.

Is surprised noone has made the comment, "They do other things?"

One of the main appeals is the ability to correct perspective distortions such as converging verticals which you get if you point a lens upwards at a building for example.

I have a Nikon 28mm which only shifts.

You can correct convergence like this, you can also do it in photoshop but you loose sharpness and pixels. Not good if you want to print large.

If I am going for large prints I also use a left shift exposure and a rights shift exposure stitched together to form a file with nearly double the native sensor resolution. These images have none of the distortion you would get with a conventional multi-frame panorama.

Cheers for all the replies guys, its starting to make a little more sense... That mirror shot is crazy!!!

I can see myself trying to borrow/hire one of these lenses to have a go!! I'm guessing thats the best way to learn!
