Thinking of getting a tilt shift for a 50D but the Canon route is far to expensive for me so I have a number of other options

Anyone got or tried the MC Arax 2.8 35mm or 80mm. Are they any good?

Anyone recommend another 3rd party lens?

Another option is to construct a DIY job using a medium format lens. The question with this is what would be the best focal length? I'm looking for a standardish length lens so 35mm on the 50D would be the DSLR length I would be looking at so is this feasable if I constructed one myself and if so what length lens in medium format do I need?

Also on this point would I be better looking for a wider lens or a longer lens for general use (building shots, fakemminature shots)?

A 35mm lens is a 35mm lens regardless of format, therefore for a standard length lens on your 50D you would need to find a 35mm lens, which is probably as wide as medium format lenses go. So your wider option would be out although there are a couple of fisheye lenses but they are almost as expensive S/H as a used Canon TSE lens.

If you do go down this route you will get the best coverage from the largest format lenses you can find of the focal length you require as they will have the greatest coverage allowing greater movements.

It may be worth looking for lenses without built-in shutters as they may be cheaper.

I think in the long run though you will probably find that it is almost as expensive as picking up a used Canon one.

What about getting an older manual 35mm version and an adapter to fit your 50D.

I have looked at the Lens baby but am not too sure that I like the image quality.

Edbray, the more I think about it the less inclined I am to go DIY but you have convinced me that 35mm ish is what I am after.

Anyone reccomend a third party tilt shift lens for a Canon?
