Time for upgrade

I currently own a canon 300D and im looking to upgrade in the next month and my budget is about £400 max.

I currently like the look of the canon 1000D, 1100D LS or DC lens. And the nikon D3100. But unsure of which one. Ive only looked at jessops, but if anyone could recommend a camera around my price range or maybe the above cheaper. Let me know :)
 
my teenage son has the D3100 with the 28-300 Nikkor lens, when I first used his camera instead of my 60D I thought cheap and cheerful and hated the brightly coloured rear screen coming on all the time like a compact.

Howver........

Having found out how to turn the screen off and adjust it for preview etc, and used the camera, it is a VERY good camera indeed.

As I have had the 300D as you, the 10D and now the 60D I have to say I would go for the Nikon D3100 rather than the Canons, it is a nice camera.
 
You're looking at moving from an older entry-level body to a newer entry-level body. The difference in performance will be less than going to an older body from a higher range (e.g. looking at a 40D or 50D).

But not knowing why you want to change, it's all just guesswork as to what you need from a new camera. What are your must-have and the nice-to-have features in a new camera?

I'm with Alastair. I'd rather have a 20d than a 600d, and I'd have money left too!

Why do you want a new camera?

What are the limitations of your 300d that are holding you back?
 
Well ive just gotten in to photography more, and in to photo shoots with friends etc.. So im looking for something around that side of photography. Ive also just looked the canon 20d looks ok. Its 2MP more then my canon and yes id have change left over.

So would going from a canon 300d to a canon 20d be worth it? And in that terms id have two cameras.

Id also like a flashy cam so when i do shoots etc.. my camera looks like other known togs etc...

I'm in the same boat at the moment (Albeit my Olympus that I have at the moment is a lot newer and technologically advanced than your 300d) - I want to upgrade. Buying used at these price levels is the only option if you truly want to upgrade. Remember, lenses make up a lot (maybe the majority) of your equipment's ability to capture great images.

That is true and why my post said my son has the D1300 and the £700 28-300 Nikkor, the lens is all important.

£400 will buy you a used 40D in the classifieds on here. I'd go for that in a flash over an xxxx or xxx series, as long as video capture isn't a requirement!

Forget about megapixels, essentially they are irrelevant when it comes to dslr's as any dslr has enough mp and more isn't always better.

Is the last bit for real?!
 
So will there be much difference if i got more lenses? Or could i buy a camera (Canon) and use my lens from my canon 300d and use it on that? Ive seen some ads but there bodies only.

you could upgrade to a 30d or 40d save some money by using the lenses from your 300d then when you can afford it you can upgrade the lenses to pretty L one's
 
A used 550D is about £370 and a 550D is about £420, I'd get either of those over a 1100D new personally.
 
There are couple of things here.

I don't see the point in going to an 1100D or similar, I don't think its a big enough jump. I'd go to a 40D or 550D I think.

The other thing is you only have one lens and to put it politely not many people rate it very highly. As someone said we don't really know why you want to change..
All Canon EF and EF-S lenses will fit your camera, those lenses will also fit any other crop sensor Canon (EF-S do not fit full frame cameras).

I'm inclined to say buy a lens or two first, then upgrade the body a little later.

A 15-85 canon just sold here for £400
There is a 18-200 up for £260, you could get that an a 50mm 1.8 and still have money left over
You could stay with the 18-55 and buy a 55-250 which is a cracking lens and only about £180 new, keep the rest for the new body.

Personally i would assess you photographic needs and figure out what lens suits the photography that you wish to do. Then find the required lens 2nd hand which will increase your lens options.

I would then learn about RAW and how that format of file works during post processing.

The 300D (if sensor is clean) is still a good camera when using RAW and may still meet your needs.

If you are still looking for an upgraded body then older an xxD is certainly the way to go.
 
I just thought that ive had my camera now about two years now, and thought it would be time to upgrade as ive gotten into photography a lot more. I plan to use my camera for photo shoots with people etc... But i may see if i can get a new lens and see the out come on that idea.

But i still may get a 40D if i can find the right one for the right price.
