Timer Cable Releases - options?

I've got an upcoming project that might require a bit of time-lapse photography so I started looking into things - does anyone know much about the cheaper imitations of the canon TC-80N3 and how they stack up at all? I suspect the internal circuitry isn't that difficult...if I recall rightly someone did make one around here didn't they?

I bought an imitation one like this from ebay. It works flawlessly, never once had a problem with it. Recommended.

I got an imitation Nikon one from eBay too. Cost £20 delivered from Hong Kong and is identical to the Nikon version which is over £100!
