Yes
I guess the "up to" bit is open to interpretation.....:suspect:

Looks about right :suspect:

My sky one was similar to that recently... Took me ages to convince them that it wasn't a problem on my end, and eventually they did a "reset on the line", apparently, and that cured it. I suspect my bandwidth had been throttled, as I'd been doing quite a bit of up/downloading of files (via FTP to my sites) in the prior week.

Edit:

Tiscali will no doubt try and blame the ash cloud for their poor speeds :D

I thought bt were bad. Do you normally get such a low speed?
If you then something is not right.

I ran a test last week and it was just a shade over 2mb, which is still crap, the "tech support" guy in India suggested I try running a cable between modem and laptop, so I did....and the speed dropped to 40kbps

I feel better now as i've just moved house and my Sky BB connection is 1.1 meg. Although its on the outskirts of Lincoln, BT in their infinite wisdom have taken the exchange from an estate approx 6 bloody miles away!!

I'm now on my 4th provider and is the best so far. Tried AOL,Tiscali & Deamon and all were rubbish. Very doubtful you'll get near to what they advertise. Moved to O2 afew months ago and i'm well pleased. Its also only costing me about £8 per month.

Think im the only person who is really pleased with virgin :)

This is on a 10mb line:

I'm on a 10MB Virgin conncetion and it's usually over 8mb's if I test it, have managed to trip the throttle limit a few times though watching i-player all evening :nono:

mines always like that fitp with tiscali :( proper annoying and even more so when my dad wont ring them and cancel it and I cant fake it as its always a bit suspect when they ask for my dads dob and i have to shout to mum and ask her what it is .

You'll be okay once your voice breaks :naughty::lol:

You will never get the full 8mbps, I usually get half that with AOL. A lot is to do with the contention ratio of the exchange. The number of people who share the line with you. Now mine has over 10,000 so its gonna get quite busy, sometimes down to half a meg a sec.

This is why I love Virgin Broadband :)

Another thumbs up for O2 here, been great since I finally ditched Virgin, who throttled me so often I started turning blue.

Im constantly downloading something, and they have never throttled me (touch wood!!)

Morning and night they hit me, I got so fed up in the end with that and their crap customer service that I finally pulled the plug. It meant changing the phone line to BT as well, but I'm glad I did as I get faster speeds and no throttling with O2.

When Virgin were good, they were really good. Unfortunately the last year of service was abysmal, which is a shame considering I'd been with them for 9 years.

Sounds like you were unlucky with them :( 3 years and going strong here, not a bad word from me, although I have never had the need to speak to anyone. I do hear theyre not the best at resolving.

Ouch! That happened to me twice on BT, their "up to" 8mb deal was just about faster than dial up, had engineers in and there was nothing wrong on my side but trying to get their tech support to acknowledge that was a pain in the backside, it seems to have sorted itself out now but I still wanna swap to Virgin.

I would ditch Tiscali if i were you (if you can obvs).
The telephone exchange is behind my mums house and she has only ever got 2mb
I rang up Tiscali and they said it was the maximum the line could support, I explained that she lived 10meters from the exchange but that obviosly wasnt on his script
She gets bang on 2mb at all time, never above so im thinking they have capped the IP profile on her line, which is generally what an ISP will do during the '10 day optimisation period' and raise it to whatever the line can support.

You try asking the indians to check what the IP Profile is set to.....

I'm on BT, about 3 miles from an exchange on 2mb internet (highest i can get where i live) when i did the test i got Download:480kbps Upload:253kbps Rubbish!!

BT say the line can only support around 2.5mb, which is odd as Tiscali sent my neighbour a card asking them if they'd like to sign up for their 24mb service......

I'll be having "words" with them tomorrow when they call with their diagnosis, especially as I've just discovered that they describe the package I'm on atm as their "superfast" ones :shake:

1832 Kb/s DL and 345 Kb/s UL.

Alledgedly "up to" 8Mb/s however never seen it more than 2.5 or so.

BT have threatened us with reducing the speed (dur like thats possible even more! Its already the lowest posiible 20 kbs!!) becasue last month we used 80 GB!! All this downloading movies and games!!! :D

I left Tiscali because of their intermittently poor service.

Signed up for O2 (formerly Be) and never looked back.

It may be nothing to do with Tiscali, there are many factors that can affect your download speeds like, time of day, how busy the server is, number of other users sharing the same bandwidth, quality and length of your bt line.

"Up to 8Mb" is the sync speed. You wont get that in download throughput, even if synced at 8Mb, more like 6Mbps. I get that (or ~5.5Mbps) on my ADSL connection with A&A, which is a non-unbundled service using BT wholesale.

The line length and quality will affect the download speed and tests should only be done with no other devices connected to your router and no other software running on the computer. Contention problems on BT wholesale based services are generally not with the number of people connected to the DSLAM at the local exchange but with contention in the fat pipe from the BT IP network to the ISP. The capacity of this pipe is specified by the ISP, so in order to keep costs down, some specify it at as high as 80:1 (nb, that figure is quite old, I can't belive any ISP would use as high as 80:1 nowadays).

I use the following download speed tester (requires flash) http://sod.ms/fast

I ran a test last week and it was just a shade over 2mb, which is still crap, the "tech support" guy in India suggested I try running a cable between modem and laptop, so I did....and the speed dropped to 40kbps

Pay peanuts ...

I might just bee cheeting slightly,

I'm at work..

The reason for the for upload being twice the download is because our download speed hasd been cappped, without the cap it would by about 100MB/s

thats what mines looking like at the moment... decievingly good - however once its evening, and the rest of the 6 people I share with are streaming iplayer etc... it hits the deck.

Ah yes... and Virgins upload SUCKS.
