At the moment I have photos displayed on Flickr and Zenfolio, incl the ones I have on TP gallery. I've been considering building a website for myself just to display my pics but I'm wondering if it is really worth the effort. I'm not going into the business of selling pics although it would be nice if someone offered.
The actual building of the site does not worry me too much as I can put a site together in my own time a sample One I built for my sister's villa which is quite successful (photos are not mine ;) )with near top positions in google.

Bearing in mind this would not be a venture into making a website to sell photos , do you think it would be worth the effort and time to create a website mainly just for displaying photos or would you just carry on with the likes of Flickr/Zenfolio etc. I realise there might not be as much of a audience to your pics as the big guys get.

If you're happy with your set up now, it depends on if you'd rather spend your time out taking photos or building a website.

You could always try a free web site here: http://www.webs.com/

It's a template site builder, but there are some ok layouts. At least you can have a go and get a feel for it, without it being too complicated
and without investing any money setting up your own site, you can pretty much choose any name you like ie; "yourname@webs.com"
which is almost as good as having your own domain.
 
I've found the easiest way is to puchase your hosting (www.123-reg.co.uk) or 1&1 Internet and puchase some design software such as CoffeeCup.
My site was built with Coffee Cup and I have no web design experience at all.
with coffee cup you can then imbed other slide shows / videos etc.

I'm going to be bringing my site up-to-date with photos soon. Repurposed from my freelance design work (I'm now in-house and fulltime.) My hosting (with the always excellent Vidahost) is just sitting there now, bit of a waste...

Looking forward to trying out http://www.staceyapp.com/ as it looks like it'll be a hassle-free way of updating without shelling out for my preferred CMS Expression Engine.
 
It isn't about just "building a site" - it's a lot more than that, thats why a lot of photographers spend a lot of time and effort on a website, and wonder why they don't get any clients.

Its not free but I use one.com and they offer a gallery option for websites, my wife uses the gallery space for storing her headshots (shes an actor)

I only registered it to get a decent email address and some webspace for our wedding website.

A welcome bonus is that spam appears less of an issue than it was with free email.

PS: I do have plans to use my gallery section at some point, but I've only just gone digital so I need some photos.....
