To buy cheap or to save for best?

I would always try to buy the best for the job. no point to buy some thing and then throw it away later. unless you can sale them later.
 
Buy cheap, buy twice has always been true for me.
 
VAST difference in price, if you can afford it and really want/need filters then get the best, however if you're not sure how often/if you will really use them then get cheaper - why waste money?
 
If watching the pennies as closely as possible I don't know if I'd buy a kit as I find that they often include items that I don't want. It may be cheaper to make up your own kit.

Cokin filters sometimes take a bashing on here for colour casts and the like but I bought mine over a period of years and in years of use I've honestly never encountered any of the problems that get mentioned here. Maybe by complete fluke I always bought from good batches...

I've never used anything but Cokin and I'm sure that Lee and others will be better but I wonder if these better ones will fit into Cokin holders? If they will upgrading when more funds are available wont be so expensive.

LEE filters won't fit in P-Type holders. They're the Cokin Z-Pro type. Holder ~£40 Adapter Ring ~£15

I might just go for the Kood kit. The kit seems pretty good. 2ND's, 2 GND's, the holder and adapter ring..all of which I'd have purchased anyway
 
A circular poloriser might be a good idea too.

+1. I had some Kood and Cokin P mix a long ago, and was really not happy with the results from either. Colour cast, scratches easily, etc, etc. Then I bought my Lee kit 5 years ago, and use them reasonably regularly, and I'm MUCH happier with the results. Still scratch free and going strong!

Besides quality your also paying for the extra size with Lee kit for use with ultrawide lenses. Cokin don't recommend there normal P holder below 28mm and even the wideangle 1 slot holder is only recommended down to 20mm.

Ah. Yeah that'd be a problem. Most of my shots are in the 18 - 30mm region, and I'm looking at a 10-20mm lens (wide landscapes are for the win) I think I'll wait for my student loan ;)

Those are 35mm focal lenghts remmeber so I'd guess the 3 slot filter would probabley be ok on a crop at 18mm while the 1 slot certainly would.

Personally owning a Canon 10-22 what I did recently was buy a 77mm 2 stop circular filter to test the waters. That way if/when I buy a 100mm system I wont be replicating gear as the cicular filter will still have its uses for convenience.
 
The Cokin P wide holder works fine at 10mm with the 10-20mm.
I would still however not reccomend Cokin filters and instead choose Hitech or Kood.

Hitech do a kit for about £150 including 3 grads and the filter holder.
 
I can also recommend the Hitech filters - I have their 85mm size in an ebay P-size holder. I use their ND soft edged grad set and their ND set, and have no complaints. Much better than my Cokin A-type ND / ND grad I used to have from my film days.

I have found that the normal holder is fine at 17mm, but it is visible on the 10-22 when at the wider end. I don't know off hand when it stops being visible, but I think around 15mm (not checked that, so could be wrong)

Becomes visible about 12mm
