To upgrade or not to upgrade?

I have been using a Canon 500D over the last 15 months or so and have been very happy with the camera. I am now considering upgrading and buying a new body when on holiday (much cheaper in USA).
I don't feel I can justify the cost of going full frame, so have been looking at the 60D and selling off my 500D.
Is this a worthwhile upgrade, will I get much more for the money?

(I'm going to see how many times I post it today - that's 3 so far ;)).

500D->60D = bigger body, more pixels on the sensor, all cross point autofocus, better metering, one stop extra auto ISO, faster synch/faster top shutter speed, extra 2fps burst, better video. Are you missing any of these?
 
I think most people are going to suggest getting new lenses instead, as is the case with a lot of these "shall I upgrade" threads :lol:

Personally I'd only upgrade if you feel severely limited by your 500D.

PS :agree:

What lenses do you have? If the kit lens, then a change for a Canon 15-85 or 17-55 (or one of the well regarded other makes) will improve the images from the camera you currently have.
 
Lenses I have are:
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

I am happy with the lenses I have atm, the extra fps and better metering are a plus, as is the rotating LCD.

Wow, that's a well rounded collection. You pretty much have all the bases covered there (unless you want an ultra wide lens). In that case, maybe the body upgrade is better.

But again, it's only if you feel it's a worthy upgrade. If you are happy with the performance of your current camera, then there's no point in blowing ~£1k for the sake of having the latest.
 
Nice lenses. How about perhaps stretching to the 7D (I know no rotating screen, but far better focusing system)?
 
The 60D is working out at around £611, I would take my chance at customs. Is the 7D £400 better than the 60D?

Depends if you value the better autofocus system and microadjust feature and better frame rate. For me, the answer was yes. The sensor is the same in both, so intrinsically they are the "same" camera...

BTW, when I looked a month or so ago, kerso (who does US imports but sells them with a UK receipt which has been used in the past to get UK service) on here had the 60D for £699 inc a Sandisk 8G 30Mbyte/sec memory card. Not sure what his current price would be, but saves the hassle of importing yourself.... The 7D at the time was £995 inc card. I now have a 7D ;)
