To VR or not?

Hi,

My Nikon kit lens has VR, is there a downside to having it on?

only some photo techniques such as panning will have VR as a disadvantage so then it is advisable to turn off.

also a common hearing is for the VR to be turned off when on a tripod because the VR in action causes more blur.

I've been cought out with VR+ tripod, i now turn it on when needed rather than off when not needed.

VR can detect panning / tripod use and need not necessarily be switched off

I had heard that was only the case for VRII.

The link on Nikon's site refers to 'Nikon's original VR function' no mention of VRII :thinking:

Hmm... Both lens and manual calles it VR, not VRII. The manual says the lens automatically detects panning.

I'm photographing at my sis-in-law's wedding on Saturday, will leave VR on.

I think they call them all VR but there was an update after the first lot of lenses - I may be wrong. If it says it in your manual then that's definitive for your lens.
