To Watermark or not?

Yes
Just a quick question, and one I think already know what the answer will be, but ...

I was out at my OH's cricket match today and managed to get a shot of the opposition getting bowled (bails flying 'n' everything). Dead happy with the shot so it's off to the Captain tonight to go in to the paper with the match report later.

However, I offered it to the guy who got out, which I'm more than happy to do at the moment (because this is only the 4th time I've shot cricket and I got damn lucky). Now should I:

a) watermark the one I send to him (knowing full well it's probably going to end up on their web site)

b) watermark the one that's going to the papers?

My thoughts are a) YES and put it over the shot and b) YES, but slightly less annoying

I've got an hour to get the details off to the team captain ready for the paper.

And before anyone asks I will be posting the shot later.

Anyone care to help me answer my own questions?

If its going to the papers then they should put your name underneath the shot, if they dont then you should let hell break loose! If you watermark it then they wont print it.

with papers and the like i only send an un-watermarked shot once payment has been recieved.

if this crciket shot is not a payed shot, then no, don't watermark it just state CLEARLY that you require a credit whereever the image is used

atleast that's how i do it and for me it works fine

Thanks voodoochild. I'll get the original off to OH's team captain now then with all the details. The EXIF is still intact on the image, but do I still need to provide the details externally to the image?

Are you sure you have got that right.. Sorry just never seen the like before and am pretty amazed if thats what you manage to do :)

Personally it takes me up to three monhs to get paid off nationals and around three weeks off local papers.. only sending them a usable none watermarked picture after they pay just doesn't work in my experience.

never had stuff nationally published, local yes it does work for me, but as i said, it works for me (and therefore may nto for others)

That's nonsense. On the timescale newspapers work to - that's NEWS papers - they cannot possibly pay you before publication. Get to know them - let them know you - send the pic - send the invoice later.

Dont think I have ever seen a watermarked image in a paper. As everyone else is saying, they should give credit to you anyway. But I would watermark the one your going to send to him for the website.

Given how boring cricket is I advise immediate image deletion and spend the time with your feet up instead! :D

Personally speaking, I watermark all images which I either intend selling or don't want to see used elsewhere without my knowledge and permission (ideally). That said, newspapers are a different matter Carol - as already mentioned.

Your local newspaper will pay for an unsolicited photo of a local cricket match?

Blimey, send me their details, i'll get round snapping rubbish local sport for them next week!
