Today = My first wedding.

So are a lot of things. I'm not a fan of using sites for Facebook, unless it's all you use it for. Even then, I don't think it looks particularly professional. Maybe I'm out of touch...

I'd tend to agree but I was at a lunch the other day and it was sponsored by a company specialising in raising business profiles via social networking sites. I reckon as the younger generation comes through it will be a perfectly acceptable route to market :shrug:

I agree completely. It's not the first time I have heard it mentioned by other pro's who I respect.

My 2pence here.

Invest in the following:
24-70 f2.8 (The sigma is a sound investment, but buy from a shop incase of focal issues that some sigma's apparenly carry. Unless you know the person like on here and know its a good copy)
70-200 f2.8 (Again, Sigma and Tamron do good versions of these lenses)

If your using a 24-70 on a 5d then you will get alot wider then on your current crop body (to get the same Fov on your 400d you would need a 15mm lens) so this should help with larger groups.

Only other choice i can think of is breaking the bank and going for 1 series, but then you would probably need to look at the Canon brand lenses to get the best of the AF systems so really pushing the boat out in the expenses there

Certain networking sites are fine, but I wouldn't use my personal profile to promote my business. Having work alongside pictures of my mates getting drunk doesn't seem like the greatest idea to me!

Did I say use your personal profile? I believe I didn't. Think outside the box slightly!!!!

Ok ill tell you, sorry I do get annoyed by people shooting ideas down when they clearly can't think of how it would work when its one of the most basic you can do (if you know facebook).

What I did:

Create a group- Luke Woodford Photography

-Invite friends list to join
-Make your profile PRIVATE so people who don't know you who join won't see pictures of you getting drunk
-ask your friends to invite their firiends etc

Simple.

I am going to need one more body.
I am considering anything from a 40d to a 5d
Have any of you guys got suggestions?
I know a lot of people will say buy the best you can afford, or is there any of you that disagree with this.
Should I go for the 5d?

Next I need one more lens at least.
During the group shots we were using a 28-70mm I think and we were having troubles with some of the larger groups.
What lenses would you promote?
Maybe 1 wide lens
And one quick lens with zoom?

Thanks for your help
Gary
FWIW here's a potted history of my wedding (and general) kit list as it has developed. I haven't shot that many weddings but I am hoping to shoot more and more as time goes on. I have no interest in setting myself up as a full time pro, with all the aggro of marketing and running a business, but would like to second shoot on a regular basis. To date I've shot one wedding for a friend, as a guest/tog and four weddings as a second shooter for a couple of pros.

October 2006 - 30D, 17-85, 580EX.

August 2008 - 30D, 40D, 17-55, 70-200/2.8IS, 2 X 580EX used for weddings. 17-85, 10-22 and 50/1.8 available as backups/alternates but unused.

November 2008 - 50D, 17-55, 70-200/2.8IS, 580EX II used. 30D, 40D, all other lenses and 580EX available as backups/alternates but unused.

Future - 1D3, 50D, 17-55, 16-35II, EF24-70/2.8, 70-200/2.8IS, EF50/1.4, 85/1.8, Sigma 10/2.8 Fisheye, 2 X 580EX will be my likely weapons of choice. The 30D, 40D and other lenses will be backups. Ultimately I am sure I will go full frame for at least one body but I'm happy with croppers for now.

My feelings on kit.....

- You must have backups/alternates for body, lens, flash;
- Bodies must be able to deliver very useable results at 1600 ISO and really you may need 3200 to be useable too;
- Flash guns must be able to tilt/swivel and you need suitable modifiers and gels to allow you to control the light and match light temperatures;
- Zoom lenses are versatile but unless you want a ton of grief you need a constant maximum aperture throughout the zoom range and anything slower than f/2.8 just won't do.
- Have a fast prime, or two, or three, for when even f/2.8 just won't get you the shutter speeds you need.

- Sure, you can scrape by with a 17-40/4 or 24-105/4 some of the time - perhaps even most of the time - and if you don't shoot manual exposure then maybe you don't even need a fixed maximum aperture on your zooms, but it you want to be prepared for all weathers and all scenarios (like no flash permitted, in a dim, oak lined church at 16:00 in the middle of winter) then you will need some top drawer kit (with backups) to be able to guarantee results every time.

Sorry but I think that's a little uncalled for, your post comes across in a less than friendly way. Mike was just saying that it's best to have a separate profile rather than using your personal profile, it may be blindingly obvious to you but I'm sure there are many people who think it's a good point, he certainly wasn't shooting your ideas down.

Maybe I was a tad harsh but in no way did he say its best to have a seperate profile, he was clearly talking about your normal profile- see bolded below.And his post didn't come across extemely friendly with an exclamation mark, it came across sarcastic.

"Having work alongside pictures of my mates getting drunk doesn't seem like the greatest idea to me!"

He assumed thats what I did, which I don't and to be honest I found it insulted my intelligence that I would even consider doing it that way. Thats all ill say on the this :)

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear - but I've seen plenty of people claiming they're professional photographers of some sort sticking stuff alongside fun stuff. Didn't assume that's what you did at all, just my experience on facebook.

Me, I've not seen the need for it yet.

Its ok, sorry for jumping down your throat but I get extremely defensive when it comes to myself sometimes, ive started my whole life from nothing fours year ago living in a horrible bedsit to where I am now and ive done it all off my own back with no handouts and its taught me so much so when I feel my intelligence is being insulted I get angry.

I agree about lots of people claiming they are pro's on facebook but a simple link to a website and you can soon see the difference in people.
