Tokina 28-80 f/2.8

Hi all.

I'm looking into a new mid range f/2.8 zoom and I have found a few Tokina 28-80s, both the older f/2.6-f/2.8 and constant f/2.8 versions. Anyone have any experience with them here? I have a 11-16 f/2.8 which I think is superb so I have no qualms about getting another Tokina lens.

I heard 28-70 2.6-2.8 is the best one. I'd be interested to see the actual results if you get one. It sounds good like a backup lens to 24-70L.

Yeah, I keep reading it's soft at f/2.8 which makes it ultimately pointless to me - but didn't find many Nikon based user reviews.

@daugirdas - Will do. I fear, in the end, I'll just get a 24mm prime as I keep threatening to myself to do.

same. there was one on here at <£100 not too long ago and I spent 90mins trying to convince myself to buy it but I only found reviews of how disappointed people were with the sharpness

I've been looking at the 2.6-2.8 and f2.8 versions for my Pentax and got some mixed reviews, most seemed to suggest it was decent but I thought £300 was probably a bit much.

Yes I read the sharpness is great from f/4 and f/5.6 onwards but no point really getting in then if it's not great at f/2.8 - given the weight.

Yeah it weighs about 760g!!!

It's my main lens and I love it. It is soft at 2.8 but that has worked for me for baby portraits with natural lighting.

A much underrated lens IMO.
