Hello, thinking about getting one of these lenses, it's the 400mm 5.6 canon fit, has anybody had any experience with this lens?

We had one at work years ago. It was very average, definitely a case of you get what you pay for.

If its for very occasional use at a low price, it might be worth a punt, but if you're hoping for a budget rival to canon's own 400mm f5.6 you're likley to be disappointed

What would you say is a good price, they seem to go from between£150-£250 that's for the tokina AT-X sd 400mm f5.6.
I'd really love the higher budget lenses but just haven't the funds! shan't bother if its not any good!! And just save!!
 
If you get a good deal on one, go for it, you'll probably find that you can sell if for as much as you paid. That way, you'll at least have access to a 400mm lens and you'll be more confident if you need to upgrade to a more expensive version.
 
They where pretty good in their day, far better than the sigma APO's which always seemed a little soft.
The main issues with all of them (I'm loath to call the budget lenses because they weren't that cheap at the time) was contrast or rather the fact that they where a little on the low side of it but its easily cured with a little contrast boost in processing.

I'd happily have another one now and would only replace if I could get something like the canon 300mm F4 or 400 F5.6
 
Previous sales on Ebay? Between 150-200 tops and thats with fees.

Thats like saying a kit lens is as good as a pro fast zoom, in someones opinion.
 
As an alternative to the Tokina, I've been meaning to sell my Sigma 400mm f/5.6 HSM APO macro. That's the last model they made, and much better than the older models. According to photozone it's as good as the Canon L. The problem is that it only works wide open on recent Canon bodies. I've not really found that a limitation, however, as you need all the speed you can get at 400mm, and it's sharp even wide open. I also found I needed to apply a bit of exposure compensation as it could over-expose on my 40D (not really a problem - you just have to remember to set it). I probably shouldn't discuss a sale on the Equipment forum,
