Tokina 50-135mm AT-X PRO and 1.4x/2x TC?

Hi there,

Does anyone know if it's possible to use a TC with my Tokina 50-135? I've not read anything about using a TC with a Tokina lens before, and was wondering if it's possible, and if so which one?

It may be possible but it would not be a good idea. You will probably not be able to autofocus and the image quality will take a huge hit.

Generally speaking teleconverters should only be used with telephoto primes and professional-spec telephoto zooms. Manufacturers like Canon and Nikon design their systems to make it impossible to fit teleconverters to lenses they deem unsuitable, but for some reason third-party lens manufacturers don't.

Thanks for that Stewart. Off to St Lucia for my honeymoon in June/July, and wanted to cut down on the amount of kit. May have to come your way and hire something!

If I remember (or if you remind me ;)) when my Tokina finally arrives (10 days from now), I'll pop on my Kenko PRO 300 (1.4x) and let you know how it works :). The TC works OK with most of my lenses, so you never know :shrug:.
 
So, Simon, I got the Tokina 50-135mm :naughty:.

First impressions (based on a couple of shots in the living room) are that it is sharp glass when (mainly when stopped down a fraction), that the AF works well but is noisy and (of most interest to you) it appears to work just fine with the Kenko PRO300 (latest version) 1.4x TC at all focal lengths :shrug:.

I've got no example images yet, so I can't vouch for the effect that the TC has on IQ, but I intend to try and use it this weekend.

If I start a thread on it, I'll send you a link ;).
