No personal experience but a quick flickr search seems to show its pretty capable.

I bet you can find a couple f/2.8 standard zooms that are nowhere near as good as that lens. Just don't get SV version which was inferior to 2.6-2.8 lens.

The reviews are there, you need to look harder.
I have a Tokina 28-80 atx and it is my favourite lens. It's a little soft wide open in good light, the AF is slower and noisier than USM and it's a heavy beast.
Would I trade it? No, not unless someone offered me L glass as a straight swap.
I also have a 100mm Tokina which is just as good.
