Tokina lens sharpness sample

This is for the one that looked into bying this lens (used) but not too sure because the soft focus problem that they keep seeing on the reviews. The problem with this lens is the sharpness when wide open. I've done a series of shots from 28-70 on f2.8 and f4 so you can see the differents. Aperture from f4 onwards is dead sharp.

All shots were done using "Aperture mode" on my Nikon D7000 and setup on a tripod and a wireless remote.

As you can see their are soft focus became obvious on f2.8 70mm ....... but it can easily fix in post without a problem.

I've try handheld at 70mm f2.8 and it is very difficult because little movement can make the photo even more soft focus ........
 
It's not a surprise that a lens with that spec yet at that price is soft wide open. There is a reason they're cheaper than the camera brand alternatives.

That said it looks more like it lacks contrast rather than intrinsic sharpness (although ultimately that means the same thing) and you've picked a particularly challenging subject with the brightly back-lit scene.
 
yeah .... the location is not something i've consider when taking some quick snap shots.

To correct this I'm not trying to complain or having bash on the lens. I'm happy with the lens but just want to show what others the pos and con of the lens.

Is not bad performance overall. I admit the subject, background and location of the shot doesn't do the lens justice at all.
 
it's still ok. well it cost less than other nikon lenses (£500+). so for the money i would say it's good.

p.s. you could upload images side by side in same focal length (f2.8 & f4) to see photos side by side :)
 
I got to admit with you on this, the lens is almost 5-6 times cheaper than the nikon 24-70mm f2.8 so i can't compare.

I paid for £200 for this lens and i think it did a damn good job. Apart from soft focus at 70mm f2.8 otherwise it is dead sharp.
 
well yeah, for £200 i can't see nothing about it really. Is soft at f2.8 specially on 70mm focal but i mainly use this lens outdoor and some indoor stuff but will be using flash so getting aperture to f4-5.6 is not a problem.

I usually use a nikon 18-70 f3.5-4.5 indoor with flash so this lens is still good and that f2.8 is just a extra bonus i guess lol.
 
The lens is certainly sharper than my replaced Nikon 18-70 at 4 - 5.6 so that will do me already, also the build quality of this lens is better then the nikon kit lens.

The f2.8 is just a added bonus and last resort really .....

For £200 is worth using it and can sell it back for the same price if decide to upgrade to 18-55 f2.8 nikon or 24-70mm f2.8 nikon

hahaha, sure man. I will let you know if i sell it. The hting about these Tokina 28-70mm lens are they are a great value lens for the spec, is not a wow lens but it certainly will do the job for most none pro photography. I use it indoor with flash and set my aperture to around 4-5.6 and all image will dead sharp even with 70mm focal.

2.8 with flash is soft but a little fix in post it can still be usuable.

Also Andrius,

"Aperture UK" in London still have the Tokina 28-70 ATX PRO f2.8 for sale for around £230, if you check on their website. I got my lens from them and it comes with a 6 month warranty.

They put that lens for sale after i bought my lol.

i've been looking to buy one of these or another version 28-80. not sure which is better. on tokina site (what i can see from specs)

28-80mm http://www.tokinalens.com/products/tokina/afl-04b.html
(so this version has:
SD glass: One element & 2 Aspherical Elements & 9 diaphragm blades)


28-70mm http://www.tokinalens.com/products/tokina/afl-03b.html
(no SD glass & no Aspherical Elements & 8 diaphragm blades)


seems 28-80mm looks better, but in real world? :help::help::help:
 
well the 28-80 is probably a better lens because is more expensive etc but i think the 28-70mm is a budget version they made but it still very good for the price.

The thing about these Tokina lens, not matter which version you aftering, it is hard to find. Is not something that you can see everyday in shop or used market. Probably a few being listed on ebay etc but then thats it.

My is ok, i don't shoot wide open anyway and i quite happy with the lens so far. Will ge testing it at the studio at work next week and see how it goes. I always have the prime ready just in case lol

is yours 28-70 AT-X PRO SV version?

would be nice to see studio quality pictures posted on here (just pure jpeg images from camera).

had a look at aperture.uk. looks ok. but can't decide which one i need to go for. have seen some on ebay.

decisions decisions..... :)
 
my is the 28-70 ATX PRO SV version which suppose to be their latest one but not the best one.

Demo sample show the lens is ok and have potential to produce decent stuff.

Will be using it next week at work for some portrait shots, so hopefully can post something up.

I got to admit the AF focus pretty damn fast and low noise at that kind of technology.

At the end of the day for £200 i can't complain too much and i do feel i can get that money back if i decide to upgrade in the future.

If this is a 800-1000 pound lens and produce soft focus etc then i will be complaining ........ lol
