Tokina or Sigma on mid range zoom

I think I'm up to the point where i need to replace my belove Nikon 18-70mm f3.5 - 4.5 AF-S for a faster lens to do indoor and wedding stuff.

I will be definately looking into used market and i filter down the following:

Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DC
Sigma 28-70 f2.8 EX
Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX

and

Tokina 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro

They all don't have internal focus so all auto focus will be on Body Driven.

I use a Nikon D7000 as well.

Was wondering how the sigma compare to the Tokina. I quite like the Tokina in a way actually.
 
Another one to consider is the Tamron 17-50 2.8, it has a good reputation for image quality.

The big advert on the bottom for the Nikon d80 dual flash memory camcorder would put me off too.
 
I've a Tamron 28-74 f2.8 and at the price point, I think it's superb.

I've found I get chromatic aberrations in some scenarios... studio work most notably. And in terms of handling, the AF/MF switch isn't that well placed, nor big enough. The AF also lets it down a little.

However, it's sharp and produces some great results.
 
I'm also watching this with interest. Looking at similar and thought I was sold on the Tamron 28-75, but still thinking. The 18-70 is a great lens and hard to replace - I wish they did the same lens at faster&fixed aperture.
 
is hard decision this. This is my current setup exclude all my prime lens.

Nikon 18-70 f3.5 - 4.5 and Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM MKII

If i get the Sigma, Tamron or Tokina 24-70 or 28-70 f2.8 i will only loose out on the wide side which i'm ok since i don't use much wide angle to behonest but will be handy to have tho ......

If i get the 17-50mm Tamron i loose the extra reach.

Is hard to decide what i want, i could get the 24-70 or 28-70 and then keep the 18-70 for the wide side ......
 
I've got the Sigma 17-50 and use it on the D7000. Very happy with the combination.
 
I'm kinda like the Tokina because of the build quality of the lens. The tamron is well know for the good optic.

The Tokina and Sigma is mix review where some say is good and some say is bad so i not too sure.

They all go for around the same price used so price is not a problem.

They all lay around £180-250

They not AF-S equivalent by the way but it doesn't really bother me to behonest.

Have you tried to work without the wide angle, before spending the money have you considered taking your 18-70 and trying to use it only between 28 and 70?

For indoor and large groups you might find 28 to be quite restrictive on a crop body, or are you keeping your 18-70 for wide angle?
 
I don't shoot much wide angle shots but i do use it sometimes like group shots you mention.

I know i definate want a 28-70mm f2.8 for low light shooting to work with my sigma 70-200 f2.8 but i will keep the nikon 18-70 for wide angle or sell the nikon and buy another wide angle lens.

Reason i didn't consider the 17-50 f2.8 lenses because i know i will upgrade to FX in the future so i might as well spend the money on a lens that work first.

I was originally looking at the Tokina 28-70mm f2.8 and the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 but the Tokina build quality sold me, the sigma EX DG is cheaper by 40-50 pound but i not too sure.

Unless someone can convince me to buy the sigma instead lol.

Gonna ring up the shop tomz to order it, i can still change from tokina to sigma :)
 
I've just pull the trigger on the Tokina 28-70mm f2.8 ATX-Pro SV. It make my decision more easier because the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 is sold.

Will be getting the lens on Tuesday so hopefully the lens is good.

you will be very happy with tokina. i have one (well wide angle 11-16mm) but optics quality and build quality is superbbbb.

Yeah, the Tokina build quality sold me to buy the lens. Review is always mix between good and bad, i'm not expecting the lens will be as good as the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 but it certainly will do the job for me and is a good lens to replace my be trusted 18-70mm f3.5-4.5.

Hopefully when the lens arrive on Tuesday i will be one happy man and i will take some sample shots.
