Well a lot of people were saying that there is very little difference in IQ between the non L and the L 100mm Macro, that remains to be seen in the coming days.
BUT, the feel and balance of this lens when plopped onto the 5D3, is a world apart from the non L, it feels superb, and I'm really looking forward to geting out with it....
 
I had all three Canon 100 macros at the same time and it really was "nip and tuck" in the various aspects that make up the overall image. Certainly any real world shots are likely to be indistinguishable.

been toying with the idea of getting the 100L myself over the last few weeks' .. so read up quite a bit on the "L" and none L
would i be right in thinking that the "L" would be a better portrait lens if needed? .. i'm leaning toward the L more if only for the resale value in the future if i was to sell
 
From a basic image point of view then there's little between them although you might get a bit of help from the IS if you're prone to wobbling a bit. I don't recall looking at focus speed as it was from a purely macro point of view.

thanks for the info Bob! ....pastyman' keep us posted as to what you think of the lens after you have shot with it' ..(interested in the combo with the 5D3 )
 
Well i had a quick play, and have noticed the AF to be much quicker, the non L used to hunt a bit.
I'm not expecting a huge IQ leap, but I am going to enjoy using it as it just feels so much better in the hand, and better balanced on the 5D3.
I know my gear far surpasses my ability, but I can grow into it:D

Really looking forward to getting out with it, and to me, that's the important part, getting pleasure from the hobby, no matter what gear you have:thumbs:
 
Glad you like the 100L Darrin its my fav lens :)
I have also got the Sigma 105 and 150 (older non OS) and looking at pictures of insects taken with each I cant really see much difference
But the Canon 100L is so much better to use, the focus is fast and the IS is really helpful.
I can get away without a tripod most of the time:)
 
Congrats on the L version mate, will be interested to see what it's like if we get down the Marsh this summer :)

you're more than welcome to have a crack with it John, see what you can do with it...
 
I am in the same position, I have the non L but I find that I am a little shakey so looking at the L for the IS.
The non L is a cracking lens and has done me proud.
 
I got the 100mm F 2.8L macro the day before yesterday.

I've not done much with it yet other than take a few snaps but part of the attraction for me (other than IS as I'm shakey) was the fact I can stick it on my 1D3 and get out in all weathers.
