Not sure how much you want to spend but I have this set and can recommend it - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAGLITE-LED-3...186489&cguid=0d6f272e12f0a0aa12a56ec5ffff61fc - The 3D is very powerful and the 2AA is ideal for tucking in the camera bag.
Is this the kind of thing your after or too large/expensive?

I have a 4 D cell Maglite that can light up stuff from a pretty good distance (about 150-200m at a guess) this cost me about £20 on eBay + batteries (I use Duracell in it). The LED versions are supposed to be even brighter.
The 2AA mag is my general use torch however as the 4D is pretty heavy.
I have been using mag for well over a decade and all my current ones are well over 5 years old and still look almost new (expect the one in the garage which is minging). I have only had to replace 1 2AA one due to using cheap batteries that I couldn't get out and 1 more because I lost it. They really are money well spent imo.

I too used to use Maglite for many years at work, along with my colleagues. I was never happy with the Polo shaped beam with a central black area. They've used them a lot on tv progs and they all show the same effect. Over the past couple of years almost all of us at work have moved over to LED Lenser from here http://www.ledco.co.uk/ Way better than Maglite. Brighter and a good beam pattern. Much smaller - 3 or 4 AAA batteries that last for ages.

It cost $70 bought in the US [say £45], but there are smaller [ 3AAAs ] cheaper ones almost as good for about £30 if you can find a source

If you have a DSLR dont worry too much about brightness try and get something with a high CRI (Color Rendering Index)

you can get goodish cheap ones from dealextreme.com though they will take a while to arrive.
I havent seen any high CRI one there. I made my own by tacking a cree torch and replacing one of the emitters with a red as its mostly red thats missing.
