Well I am brand new to talk photography and about to take the leap into the world of DSLR. I think I have narrowed it down to 2 cameras A D90 with a 18-105 lens v's a eos 500 with an 18-200 lens. Any throught welcomed. I know I am comparing Nikon and Canon.....

I would say the D90 - it is a better camera than the 500D - the D90 is in the next bracket up when it comes to IQ, build quality and features.

Another vote for the D90, however having never used a 500D I can't really comment on it

:)

I thought the D90 was comparable to the 50D, rather than the 500D? Or am I getting that wrong? The 500D is a step up from entry level, whereas the D90 is a few steps up?

To be honest, both Nikon and Canon are making fantastic cameras, and you'll be hard-pressed to tell the difference between them most situations. Have a play with both of them and see how they feel, that's much more important!

In my opinion, get the D90. It's made of plastic like nearly other 'consumer' camera, however it's very high quality plastic and it's built to last. Mine is six months old and hasn't got a mark on it.

The IQ, noise and general handling are all superb.

its not the camera but ther person using it lol. personally i would go for the canon but that's just me

What ever feels good to you to be honest, its big descion as you will start to build up your lens collection and its easier to stay with the one system. You wont see much difference in IQ id say between the 2 so its down to which you as the user like using feels more intuative. Have you held/used both? I think from memory the Nikon lens is better than the Canon (the 18-200 isn't supposed to be that great, never used it thou).

I've owned a Sony (a200), a Canon (40D), and a 2 Nikons (D40 and D90). Out of the three I found Canon's interface and controls to be the least intuitive, Nikon being streets ahead the best. But it's personal preference..get down to a shop and handle them.
But as others have said, a 500D comes in at a lower level then a D90 - just having the top LCD panel is worth it in itself

I've used both these and I went for the D90, My friend who's got a 500d which I used to compare the two is now in the process of changing to the D90.

Like allready stated i don't think they can really be compared *** as the D90 is a step up from the 500d.
