Toshiba external drive problems

The power light on my Toshiba external drive was red instead of blue when I connected it the the PC the other day would that be a power supply problem ?

After a while it started working and I was able to get the files off
It seems to be OK now but I dont trust it now
It was my second backup drive and had not had much use so am a bit disapointed:'(
I had by mistake left it permanently connected to mains and turned on but the USB not plugged into the PC would this have damaged the power supply ?

thanks neil I cant find the manual ! but have searched on google apparently the red light is caused by the board inside the case failing , not the drive itself so will probably replace the case
identical ones are apparently available on ebay:)
