Hello,

Sorry in advance as I don't know anything about photography so please excuse my ignorance. I am after getting my girl friend a gift and a friends said there are good people in the know on this forum who can help me.

My girl friend has a Nikon D60 with AF-R f1.8 35mm, AF-R VR 18-55mm and AF-R 55-200mm lenses. Its only a hobby for her but I know should like a lens with a bit more of a zoom. I don't have that much cash so I was looking at getting her these.

However a friend has told me that they think the lens does not work the converter doe to it being to slow. I have seen 1.5x and 1.4x lenses would they work? Or any suggestions on what to get her with around £300 to play with?

Thanks in advance for the help

Don't know anything about Nikon's mate but this will put your post to the top of the board. Welcome by the way

the convertor won't allow autofocus as your lenses too slow, unless she needs a really long lens think I would skip the tamron as she has 3 nice Nikon lenses already.

What about a Nikon flashgun

Thanks for the advice and free pump. She was after a longer lens as she has started to get in to taking photos of the nights sky and tells me her 200mm is to small. I just though I would surprise her with one.

It's a lovely thought Zilog, but if it's the night sky she's after - astrophotography - that is a specialised area probably beyond general photographic equipment. The best you can do is something like the moon but even that needs a lens at least 400mm to get something decent. Astronomers use absolutely huge telescopes.

In terms of longer lenses, 300mm is not massively longer than 200mm in that it won't allow you to do much different. It's usefully closer, but not the difference between getting something and nothing at all. Over 300mm is expensive, and over 400mm is mega costly.

If you want to get her a camera-type present, she actually has quite a nice outfit already. Does she have a bigger flash gun? Make sure you get one that is fully compatible with her Nikon's auto TTL metering, like Nikon SB600 (£200) though there are cheaper ones. Or maybe something for close-ups, like a macro lens, or macro tubes (Kenko £120) or a macro attachement lens (Raynox £40). Maybe she'd like a super-wide for landscape stuff and wacky perspective, like a Sigma 10-20 but that's about the cheapest decent one going and it's over £350. A good tripod can be had for £100 or so :)
