A friend of mine back in BC is a well established guide / hunter. Calling him last night I asked if he could a take a week out of his schedule and take me on a grizzly search. I have long wanted to get close, photograph and track the grizzly bear. Looks like we will be doing it in August.

I have tracked deer and attempted to track a wolf not so long ago but my skills are somewhat lacking compared to him. So it should be fun.

Obviously there won't be any hunting but he will be armed as a form of protection that hopefully won't be required. The grizzlies are dangerous and if roused will attack and kill you. His experience will hopefully avoid this kind of situation.

Any advice from the wildlife togs amongst us? Pack lots of Mars bars, batteries and liquid strength?

I've seen 5 grizzlies in Alberta in the year I lived there and I pooed my pants each time I saw one, I wouldn't be able to track them.

The best sighting was in Kananaskis and interlakes where I saw a mother and two cubs swimming across the lake in front of me.

Make sure you're the one wearing trainers - you only have to outrun your mate  Seriously though hope you have a great time and get some piccies up when you get back.

Yeah, I have been thinking that too,... maybe an 800? I asked my friend how close we could get and he said within 50 feet. I wonder, but it will be interesting. Hopefully the shutter sound doesn't twist his knickers in a knot. My aim is to use the shortest focal length as possible and survive. I would like an 85mm portrait or environmental setting photograph.

I have a feeling I will more than likely tremble with fear and curl up into a little ball with tears dripping off my eyelids before I get that close.

I am a slow runner :(. Didn't play 2nd row rugby with 4 pins in my knee for nothing.. I'll stand my ground and go out with a bang if it comes to that .

Can't help with the wildlife photography advice... but I am really jealous and hope you post pics when you get back!

:D thought of that one...and the grizzly becoming a christian

there's an old Squamish Indian legend along the lines of.....

you wait till the bear is about 50ft away on his charge - then give him a "come hither look"...
he'll stop - give the look again
when he's 20 ft away - again give a "come hither look"....
he'll stop - give the look again
when he grabs you - reach down and give his b8lls a mighty squeeze !

he'll drop you - run - and dont look back in case he's giving you the "come hither look".....:lol::lol:
