After a bit of thinking we've decided to give another option a trial run. Basically, we've installed an auto-image resizer.

By default, the forum will resize any large images down to 800 pixels high or wide (whichever is the longest). (It will not resize upwards).

For those of you who think 800 pixels is medieval technology and want larger, then you can go into your User CP > Edit Options and scroll down.
Under "Image width / Image height" enter 0. This will override the forum default of 800 and will not resize images for you at all.
Alternatively you can enter an inbetween figure if you prefer something in the middle.
If you leave the width/height boxes empty, then it will revert to the forum default of 800 pixels.

Please note this may be a temporary measure, depending on how it goes with server load, and a few other factors.

The main downside I can see here is that we comment on a pic saying "it's a bit oversharpened" or "halo where the sky/land meet" only to find it's been auto-resized and this has done the damage. I actually liked it halfway through testing when I could click on the banner (or a button would be slicker) above the image to immediately see the bigger size if I wanted to.

Great to see a proactive measure being trialled there folks

Beyond the 1024px & 800px (width) comments in the preceeding thread as well as the eeyons of others on the subject, another size was muted too; 900px wide. Once the resizer is trialled at 800px, would it be conceiveable to perhaps trial 900px resizing to see if that size reaches a happy medium...?

If you want 900 just put 900 in the width box in options and only images bigger will be resized.

That hasn't changed. That's the way it works, if it's resized, you see the banner.

could you make it automatically make any image posted (apart from smilies) be a link to the original image? would be a neat way to offer people a clickthrough to avoid 'bad sharpening' queries.

Cheers Darren, never saw that in the OP.
Can we post bigger than 1024 :D

I think that would be extracting the michael a wee bit, Paul. If you look to the recent Poll thread where there's images resized you'll notice that there's at least one which exceeds 800kb. So, it's not just pixel count that members need to be mindful of (albeit that's the main crux being posted in the threads), it's also the file size as that's what will soak up bandwidth and be the achilles heel in any trials that take place in order to resolve this age-old issue.

Just so I understand correctly ..... :) If we chose to stay with the 800px (or something other than the actual size) ... we get the header showing us the image has been re-sized

pretty much, but only if its been posted at larger than 800....or you can set it in your user CP to not resize, so you get to see out of focus pictures of next-doors cat at 1024...

Yes. Not sure how else you can want it?
Edit , ah, unless you want it at 800 pixels and dont want to know if it's been resized.

Can we have an auto boob enlarger script Marcel? And afterwords, can you post a topless shot for me? Or PM me with it....oh drat! PM has been disabled because of the crummy 50! Can you email me a high res photo of your boobs? :D

I just find the header very distracting to the image :) Is it really that necessary?

If the image has been re-sized and I hover the mouse over then I know from the cursor that it is linked to a larger sized image, I don't need to know the size!

I really like the idea of the re-sizing ... It's just the header spoils the clean look of the images in a thread, especially where there are several images ... all just IMHO of course ...

Just tried it out on one of my 1024px wide image posts:

HERE

Works like a charm! I can browse and scan through a thread normally and expand an image at will - Thanks chaps!

That hasn't changed. That's the way it works, if it's resized, you see the banner.

Aha... seems I was just looking at threads with 800px or less images. Changed my prefs to 200px and it worked a treat.

I think this is a great move... just need to decide my optimum size for 'quick scanning' of threads now :)

If it's a success and the feature stays, could we have a tidier little icon maybe, rather than the banner running the full width of the pic? Might be a little less distracting.

I have to say this a very sensible solution to pleasing everyone over this image size issue.

Excellent! I only have to resize once now for competition entries and for TP posts

At least at 1024 we can see it's an oof cat. At 800 it might be a rat:)

Nice one Marcel.

BTW there is a typo on the information strip above the resized image 'weights' should be 'weighs' (I think) :)

Im sure i suggested this in the vote thread :-)

I think its a good option, if you want a better look at the image just click the bar at the top easy!

marvellous stuff
well done hamster-herders!

some people you just can't please eh!!

seems like a perfect solution so hopefully people can just accept the work you've done to try and meet everyones needs!!!
