Trading anything in to a dealer you'll shed cash. Why not sell the 550d instead and then get the 7d.
I asked one of the forum favourite dealers a trade in price on a 2 week old GF1 kit against a DSLR body...they offered me 20 quid less than if I'd have just taken it in to CEX! Neither price was any good..I'd rather have kicked it round the garden than give it away at that price - it honestly was quite insulting.

What he said was thinking of trading my d40 ... I was offered 80£ from one dealer and 70£ from another and that assumed mint condition... I mean cause it is so old I only stand to gain another 60-70£ selling privately but your 550d is much newer so you'd lose a lot more trading in.

dont forget they hjave to buy cheaper to sell at gonig rates for 2nd hand gear. The only way it will work is if you barter them down on the new kit to cover your loss. I got a good deal from jessops with no trade in, there was very little movement on the body but a spare battery, memory card and other bits were either free or heavily discounted.
