Transferring software to new PC

Should I move it from the old machine on a CD or DVD, complete with the latest updates, or use the original discs and update separately?

Any other hints and suggestions.......?

you cant move it from machine to machine (by draging and dropping etc), youll need to install it on the replacement machine.

You could ghost your old machines HDD and dumpt the image on your new one. Damn messy though as all the drivers on the image wouldn't match your new machine.

Clean install mate, it's the only way to be sure.

As said, fresh installs are the esiest way to go

gives you a chance to update everything aswell

ghosting old drive to new will result in blue screen of death 9 times out of 10 to so it may not even boot

In a word, no. Simply copying program files to a disk takes not account of alll the related registry enteries and other system files that get sprayed around the place. You need to reinstall from the original disks or download files.

nope. when you install software onto a PC it writes a series of entries into the background, copying/burning the directories onto CD wont transfer these to the new PC.

fresh installation is always best, especially if you are going from one OS to another.

OK, here's one for you......

I've been successfully using Quickbooks 3.1 for Windows on my XP machine. It is installed on floppy discs.

How do I get it to run on my new w7 machine?

If it will run, copy all files on floppies to dvd or usb flash stick.

Copy onto new machine and run setup.exe or whatever the install file is called.

So I find someone who can copy floppies on to a CD and try using that.....

I wish I could remember how I installed it on my last PC, let alone the new one.....

failing that a USB stick should be cheaper, even if its a 256mb (if you can still get them) to run your software from
