Transition from the 1000D to.............?

Ok, I have been owned and been using the 1000D for approx 1.5 years now.
I am starting to feel that my photographic skills have pushed the camera to its virtual limits.
In the next 6 months I will be looking to upgrade. At present I am looking just to see what is what on the market but my eye continually casts itself over the 40/50D.

Do you guys think this would be a suitable transition to make and ultimately would they give me room to further expand my skills?

I know some people say glass before body so just to put you in the picture this is the glass I have at the moment.

18-55 IS (although this will stay with the 1000D when I hand it down to the wife) and likely be replaced with something like a 17-55/17-85.
50mm f1.8 II
70-200 F4L
100mm f2.8 macro (getting delivered when Santa comes)

You are probably ready for 5D (classic or new) 24-105mm kit - a big step over any xxD

I've noticed that early 5D's can be had for a decent price. As for new 5D's I would put them well out of my price range.

Seems a hefty jump to make though from XXXXD to XD.

I had a 500d for less than a month then got a 5D. It's no different really, just larger and nicer to use IMO.

Has some disadvantages (small screen, little slow) but the camera still holds its own now. 12MP is plenty, the FF sensor gives excellent photos and the viewfinder is huge!

You have no EF-s glass so I'd go for it. Can't see you regretting it one bit.
