Normal camera bag for jobs where I can drive to a location to set up, and a lowepro backpack for when I can't.
When i used to do more commercial work in pretty industrial and busy environments, I used aluminium flight cases too for protection.
It all depends on how much protection you need, how much walking you need to do, and what's appropriate... and whether it's safe to leave gear in the car or not.
I don't shoot motorsport though.... so others will no doubt give advice based on that environment.

I use a Citroen Berlingo van. I can comfortably get all of my gear in there with room to spare. Although sometimes I have to get out and walk.
It would make a good vantage point too, I might have trouble getting it through the gate though

Getting there isn't too much of a problem as I can use a couple of camera bags in the boot, it's more transporting it around once I'm there.
Usually I'll have a camera with the lens I think I need set up and carried, a backpack with spare batteries, cards, etc, it's just now getting to the stage where I am trying to carry enough to cover every situation.

I've got a small camera bag that takes a camera and lens with another compartment that takes my 120-400 lens, and it all fit neatly into my tank bag. when i get to where im going just take my small camera bag and leave the t/bag on the bike, chain the helmet to the rear wheel & off i go

It's OK, you tend to get out of that stage once you realise what a chore carrying all your gear is.

I find it incredible that obtaining one of a decent design is so damned hard. They'd sell like hot cakes if someone could actually do that!

A vest is fine.... untill you have to put a media/safety vest/bib over the top of it. That makes hard to access the pockets.
I use a Think Tank harness system. There are other good brands around as well. You just configure them for different shooting needs.

I went out and got the ThinkTank belt system. With two camera over the shoulders,I can then carry another 2-3 lenses in the belt system without it being unbearable. It suits track photography but with rallying, I always carried a large camera bag (LowePro Pro Trekker 400AW) which did get very, very heavy and uncomfortable after 5-8miles of walking per event.

I tend to use either a Think Tank belt system witha couple of pouches and just carry the camera/s or a large backpack.
The trouble I find with the Think Tank at least on the speccy side is either when the weather is going to wet/heavy showers (a normal summers day then
) is carrying all the extra gear e.g. rain coats, waterproof covers for camera and lens and to that the (at some tracks) essisantial stool/steps it can get a bit unmanagable. And if your at certain tracks (donnie & Silverstone) on pratice/qualifying days you have to carry enough water/food if you venture away from the main areas as noramlly the refeshment places are normally closed.

Do you use the harness with the belt Graham or just the belt alone? Which belt ?

If you don't mind me commenting, I do use pro speed belts.
If the belt is lightly loaded - it is ok by itself.
If the belt is heavily loaded - you will need the harness to keep it up as the weight of gear and water bottles (I live in Australia) will drag it down, especially if you have a bit of a tummy.
Even when loaded up it is still very comfortable.
