Hello all!

Im going travelling to Asia for 3 months at the end of november, going to Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Combodia. Im planning to further build my portfolio out there but the main problem im thinking of is storing my images once im out there. Im not keen on buying a hench load of CF cards as i need all the penneys i can lay my hands on to fund my travels.

Anyone have ay ideas or suggestions who have been in the same boat?

Cheers
Pricer

just get yourself a dropbox account or similar, then visit internet cafe's every week and upload everything. They are rife through all of south east asia,

or what i did 10 years ago was burn them onto cd's and dvd's and post them home. Didn't lose any but they were only snaps back then, now i'd go with the online storage rout so i could see they were actually there

Looking at the 5DII file sizes, it looks like you'll get about 70-80 raw files in a free dropbox, or maybe 300-odd l/f jpegs.
Shelling out the $30(£18-19) for 3 months of the 50Gb one should up that to maybe 2000 raw or 7500-odd jpegs.
Would those limits be workable?

Im not taking a laptop out no, im still quite sceptical taking all my camera gear out there in case it gets lost/stolen etc. As for the internet storage, im signed up to dropbox but im not sure if it will take 3 months worth of images.

yeah, i didn't mean a free account, 3 months worth of raws you'll need to purchase the membership

Or if you can access your home computer via ftp you could happily upload everything there.

Alternatively hard drives are getting very cheap. 250GB shouldn't cost that much, just take care not to lose it.

thought about this for a remote caravan trip up the west coast of Scotland next year

ok ok it's not Cambodia........

Maplins are selling a 1T external HDD for £45 sale
buy a 4GB HDD laptop from Comet at £300 and, with a card reader > laptop > HDD

should be able to get the lap battery charged every other day..?

ok not a hi-tech solution but doable....

i wouldnt take a hard drive with me, too much risk of damage due to the travelling part

they're pretty durable when powered down.

You've got a few options. A hard drive backup device might be a good plan - 300gb drive with a compact flash slot in the side that you can download to. Uploading all the pictures to dropbox (or worse, your home computer) from internet cafes would take forever and cost you in internet cafe time - you want something as easy to use as possible.

I would, however, still take enough compact flash cards to not have to wipe them - always keep 2 copies of your photos. Buy some 16gb transcend ones if you must, dump the new pictures off them every night onto your hard drive backup device, and put it back in your camera and keep shooting. Keep your used cf cards, and the hard drive unit seperate, in case of theft / loss of one bag.

something like this: (Hyperdrive colorspace) http://www.hypershop.com/HyperDrive-COLORSPACE-UDMA-s/64.htm

i went a few years back to thailand, and theres loads of computer internet cafes all over, even on islands like ko phangnan. They let you upload stuff on those. the other places im not so sure though :D

im so jealous, i so want to go back to asia :D

hadn't thought about external hard drives! Is there any risk or data loss if they pass through the airport security checks? (x-ray and and all of that malarky)

no, they're fine.

These aren't a normal external hard drive, more just something you can dump your pictures onto.

I would strongly recommend taking a small netbook to back up your photos and a portable hard drive to back up the back up. Keep them all separate from one another and if someone really wants to take your camera/computer, rest assured its insured - just take the memory card out before you hand it over (if you have the presence of mind - takes a bit of doing in that situation) or rely on the portable hard drive back up.
The problem I found with that particular part of the world is that the internet cafes are pretty lax with computer security. It's a haven for backpackers, many just out of college, many don't know how computer viruses are transferred, just don't care if they did and cafes can't keep up with it all. I don't wish to make you paranoid but I've spent an awful long time there and was very grateful for my own equipment. At the end of the day, the only person you can really rely upon is yourself. I've seen *** lose photos, mid-burn, due to sudden power cuts and the thought of losing ?Gb of photos is every travelling photographers nightmare.

I wonder how many camera thieves are charitable enough to allow the owner to remove the memory card??!!

I would have thought most camera thefts would either be:

1) Grabbed without owner noticing (most likely)
2) Grabbed with owner noticing but too quick to allow owner to react in time.
