Travelling with a DSLR

I've never taken the camera anywhere where I couldn't quickly return home for forgotten pieces, so going on holiday to the other end of the country is quite exciting. There is a camera shop where I'll be staying apparently, but don't really want to pay out on things I already own but forgot.

Any advice people can give for going on holiday with a DSLR, basic errors that should be avoided?

I prefer to travel light. Unless it is a photography trip I just take body and my walkabout lens, in my case a wide fast prime. This goes in my hard luggage, so as not to get destroyed by baggage handlers.

Don't forget your polarizing filter! I left mine at home last time i went away - don't need it much in the UK, but its invaluable if you're going south.

Make a list well in advance of leaving and then tick everything off once it's in the bag. If going by plane, keep as much as possible in hand baggage (particularly body, lenses and filters)

How much stuff do you REALLY need? I went around the world with one body and one lens, the charger and a tiny 6" tripod.

Some people just have too much sh]t.
:)

I went to Fuerterventura for a holiday at the end of May, decided to leave my 7D at home and took my old 400D and Sigma 18-200mm instead, along with a Jessops flash gun, stofen diffuser, 50mm f1.8, spare battery, charger and some spare AA rechargeables.

Weight wise it only came to about 3KG which left me 2KG for other travel essentials such as an iPod, Nintendo DS etc

Definitely take you gear as handluggage as someone else on here pointed out, "Handle with Care" labels are just for show

Oh yeah, if you want to take a tripod, most airlines will insist it's kept in the hold as it could be used as a weapon.

Hmm if it's the other end of the country, are you flying etc like assumed here? I imagine most of the advise here is irrelevant if driving!

Personally, as I'm always going by car, I take everything - however for me that's only 1 camera and 3 or 4 lenses. around 4 memory cards last time, 3 batteries etc.

Obviously if you have 3 camera, 22 lenses, 36 memory cards and 54 batteries, leave some at home :D

Main thing as someone said though is to remember to take chargers! I'd also add things like a sensor swab (else can guarantee you'll get something in there the first day!), cloth, lens pen etc - whatever you use for cleaning.

Decided to take my Nikon D40 body and a couple of lenses as I heard there was trouble with theft in Prague but will take my D90 next time with 10-20 mm and 18-200 as I think most likely theft would be pick pocketing rather than camera from around my neck!

Train to the nearest port on the mainland, then taking a ferry from there to our final destination, so we'll have all of our luggage with us all the time.

Camera to tv cable, nice to sit down of an evening and view the pictures on a tv. If you're not taking a laptop.

I have taken my tripod as hand baggage on Ryanair, easyJet and Norwegian Air in the past 18 months or so, and have had no problems with my tripod in hand baggage.
